Weinrich in the wings
How's this for an interesting question to end Brian Burke's league conference call yesterday in Anaheim?
The Ducks have had a couple injury woes on the blue line so far in the postseason, and you have to think that instead of calling up the likes of Aaron Rome again, we just might see the 40-year-old Weinrich jump back into a depth role in Anaheim.
And that'd be quite a story.
Q. Is there any consideration at any point of calling up Eric Weinrich? Could you see him back in Portland next year as a mentor on the ice or would you rather have that roster spot to develop maybe a prospect?Weinrich retired last season after an 18-year NHL career and took an assistant coaching position in the AHL, but in January he unretired and began suiting up for the Portland Pirates team he had been on the bench with.
BRIAN BURKE: It's a fair question. I don't know. Kevin Dineen is here. We called up a number of players from Portland. Bob Murray comes in tonight, we'll go through the process of evaluating the coaches and players and what we'll do next year. I cannot answer the question at this time.
Certainly Eric Weinrich is a quality guy. Obviously we felt highly enough of him to bring him in as a coach. Whether there's a place for him going forward, I don't know.
