Cammalleri hearing concluded
Rich Hammond has some nice reporting from the Mike Cammalleri arbitration hearing tonight, including a whole whack of quotes from Kings GM Dean Lombardi that give you an idea of just how little fun the whole process can be.As with Sean Avery's on Monday, it was another long hearing (near five hours). Hammond says Cammalleri will receive a two-year deal at the team's request, and my guess is given the big numbers he put up last season, he's probably looking at a contract in the $10-million range.
My second guess is that his side would have used Marian Gaborik's three-year, $19-million contract from last summer when the Wild sniper narrowly avoided arbitration, while Los Angeles probably wants something in the Nathan Horton/Derek Roy ballpark ($4-million per season).
Cammalleri's 80 points made him one of last season's biggest breakout players and, more importantly, helped me win a couple of my hockey pools. His size has always made him an incredibly underrated player, both in his draft year, as a prospect and so far as an NHLer, but I'll always remember the inspiring turn he put in with Team Canada at the world junior tournament in 2002.
He's no one-year wonder.
