Gainey's son joins Blazers
The Kamloops Blazers today announce the hiring of Steve Gainey as an Assistant Coach for the 2007-08 WHL season. Gainey, a 28-year-old Blazer alumnus who calls Kamloops home, joins Andrew Milne and Shane Zulyniak as assistants to Dean Clark.
After a four-year career with the Blazers from 1995 to 1999, Gainey played six seasons of professional hockey in the IHL and AHL with the Kalamazoo K-Wings, Utah Grizzlies, Philadelphia Phantoms, and the San Antonio Rampage and has 30 games of NHL experience with the Dallas Stars and Phoenix Coyotes.
I'm surprised to see Gainey retire at such a young age, and I don't know if injuries were a factor. He played in 20 NHL games with Phoenix in 2005-06, had a tryout with Vancouver last fall, but was cut from the team in training camp.
He should be a nice fit in Kamloops.
