Generals to retire Orr's jersey

The Oshawa Generals are pleased to announce that the No. 2 jersey made famous in Oshawa by legendary hockey great Bobby Orr will be officially retired and raised to the rafters at the General Motors Centre on Thursday, November 27.

The Generals will face the Peterborough Petes that night and the club is privileged to also announce that Orr and his family, friends and former teammates will be on hand for special pre-game ceremonies which will begin just after 7 p.m.
A nice honour. The only thing I wonder is why on earth it took 42 years to retire the number of one of the most famous players in hockey history.

In any event, if you're an Orr fan in the area, mark this date on the calendar and head to the game.

Too bad I'm not in the area...it'd be great to see any tribute to Orr given out. And you're right, James, the timing is weird. I can't think of any reason for them to not have retired the number as soon as Orr retired form the NHL.

Maybe Lindros is that much better than the best defenceman in the history of hockey? Who knew.

To call Orr "one of the most famous players in hockey history" is certainly damning him with faint praise. He remains, of course, the greatest player of all time. Just the other day, in the National Post, Pat Quinn said Orr was the best he ever saw. Too bad you youngsters never had the opportunity to witness the magic.
