Welcome to From The Rink
Welcome, welcome — this is the official unveiling of Mirtle blog 2.0. Don't mind the mess as I'm just starting to get settled in.
Oh, and wipe your feet.
After almost four years at my humble home at mirtle.blogspot.com, my site makes a jump to SB Nation — a move that is going to be a significant upgrade in a bunch of ways.
Everything will remain the same when it comes to blog content, but there are a few additions in terms of the software that will take some getting used to. Unfortunately you will have to login to post comments — but the real-time system here should be a huge plus that I hope we can take advantage of.
And by all means try out the FanPosts and FanShots features and let me know what you think.
Behind the scenes, I'll be helping to build the SB Nation hockey community, which has a solid start with up-and-comers like Mile High Hockey (Avs) and Pension Plan Puppets (Leafs). There also team blogs for the Penguins, Sabres, Wild, 'Hawks, Wings and Sharks, with plans to add 22 more to round out the roster.
Thanks for stopping by (and I'll take questions — if there are any — in the comments).
Here's the weepy goodbye to the old digs.

I hate IT people
I mean, I don’t, they’re nice, but if they have iTunes on their computers, why do they get to block it from the rest of us???

Because
We like bribes in exchange for permissions.
Seriously, bake them cookies, and you’ll have iTunes in no time.

I dunno about you
I’m a techie nerd on the side, so I hit it off quite well with our office IT dood and got him to give me full admin rights on my PC so I am free to do what I want on it. Can’t do much about bypassing internet filters/blocks but at least I can dull the pain with Firefox.

by Winkle on Oct 20, 2008 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Firefox
Yeah, I managed to do that for a while, but our corporate headquarters in Edmonton can also monitor what programs you have on your computer so the IT guys were forced to take Firefox off :(.
by Karina on Oct 20, 2008 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That suuuuuuucks
Horribly, hey my company’s corporate headquarters is also in Edmonton, we have so much in common.
Actually a co-worker of mine had a good idea to put Firefox on a USB key and he just runs it off of that, so technically its not installed. But obviously there are filters to block that kind of usage too.

by Winkle on Oct 20, 2008 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
When I started
First thing I did was tell the big boss about Firefox, he tried it for five minutes then told me to put on every computer in the building. And he can barely tell the difference between a laptop and a desktop.
This was back before IE7 days though, so IE didn’t have the tabs feature.

Hey James, I guess this was the “big changes” you were hinting at a couple weeks ago. Trying to set up an account here but it’s not going to good here at work, I’ll probably have to wait to finish off the details tonight.
I hope that this doesn’t mean you’ll exclusively focus on the NHL, or even hockey. I loved seeing your major junior posts and even your CIS posts on the old site.

Welcome from MileHighHockey!
From Joe, Drafty, and Mike:
Welcome to the SBN’s little corner of the intratubes. Swing by a game thread at MHH and witness the glory of game girls, throwing goaltenders under the bus, and shameless Joe Sakic worship (contrary to some, he is NOT a detriment to the team…)!!!!!!

Man I think everyone at some point has worked for a company like that. Back in college I worked at an office just doing boring customer service work. The monitored my computer like I was a hacking into bank accounts or something. Anyways, when the day came that they controlled my mouse, opened up a notepad document and type “Get back to work,” I typed back “Go F yourself” and left. I don’t miss that place at all.

It just means that when they set up the computers at the office, they turned on auto-remote-desktop-assistance by default so they can connect and take over your PC without your consent at will. That’s very dirty and low.

Oh that’s the thing, I knew it was on. And one of the many things they sold was the computer software to do that. I don’t remember what it was called, but it loaded up in my system tray every time I started my computer. I just didn’t think they could control my computer all that easily. I thought they were just looking in from time to time, but I was wrong.
And apparently the consent came with the paper I signed when employed. They of course down talked it at the time as “hardly ever do it,” but there wasn’t a day that went by when they wouldn’t. I started to get the hint when they told me, “you don’t have to delete your history, we have it saved on a server anyways.”

By the way (and maybe someone already said this, not reading 101 comments just now) but why do they have dropdowns for favorite MLB, NBA and NFL team but not NHL? It’s not like the NHL teams change as often as, say, an NBA team.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope.
