Searching for teen sensations

The NHL certainly seems younger these days ... but maybe I'm the only one who finds a 1990 birthdate odd. It feels like it's hard to watch a game these days without a teenager taking part — and often making an impact — which certainly wasn't the case even four or five years ago.

Here's a look at the 20 youngest players in the league this season, a group that includes five defencemen and 15 forwards (Carey Price, 21, is the youngest goalie and the 37th youngest player in the NHL):

Stats are from prior to last night's games, by the way.

There are actually only eight 18-year-olds — and 16 teenagers — in the NHL so far this season, so they're still a pretty rare breed. And this group will likely shrink as we hit the nine-game mark, when teams have to send players back to junior hockey or have their entry-level contracts kick in.

(Filatov's an exception given he's able to be bounced between the NHL and the minors due to the fact Russia never signed off on his agreement with his OHL club.)

If we keep looking up the line to older players, there are 32 under the age of 21 in the league to this point, which makes up only 4.7 per cent of all 675 players that have skated in at least one game.

Who's been good? Doughty in Los Angeles so far looks like a real keeper, and scored a nice goal the other night.

Boedker has really nice, NHL-calibre wheels but will probably take some time to become an elite point producer. (Phoenix looks like a team with some great pieces and some serious growing to do.)

Moller, a kid who I'd heard very little about coming into the season, also looked quite good in the Colorado game the other night, picking up a goal and an assist. He was a big-time scorer in the WHL last season, finishing seventh in league goal scoring, and may have been a steal as a late second rounder back in 2007.

Another player to watch on this list that I haven't seen get any attention is Columbus' Jake Voracek, who picked up another two points on Tuesday night despite playing less than 11 minutes. If Ken Hitchcock gets a little more comfortable playing him — he's been on a nifty second line with Derick Brassard and Jason Chimera — Voracek's point totals could really take off.

He piled up 187 points in 112 games in junior hockey the last two years and is proof that Columbus might finally have found some secondary scoring.

That said, I still don't think we'll see a teenager score points the way Patrick Kane, Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin/Sidney Crosby did the past three seasons. Consider that the anomaly.

Who's impressed you?

Any thoughts on Luke Scheen?

He’s been eating up time for the Leafs, which isn’t a stretch of the imagination in any means, but has solid skating ability and a presence in the defensive zone.

He's Been Impressive

Easily the most consistent blue liner on the team next to Kaberle and Kubina, if Schenn doesn’t get sent down (and it looks like a very real possibility now), those three will make up the core of the defense for the team for the rest of the season (until Kabby and Kubby gets traded at the deadline anyway).

But at the same time we need to be careful and not jump the guy, it also wouldn’t hurt to take a step back and take a breath and approach this more cautiously, make sure he is developed properly since he’s the most exciting draft pick/prospect the Leafs has had since Antropov.

Luke Schenn is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

He’s incredibly strong, especially for an 18-year-old, but it’s hard to tell if he’ll ever develop any sort of offensive game. He’s made a few mistakes so far with the Leafs, and it’d be good if he can go play at the world juniors, but I think he’s going to be in this league a long, long time.

He's 18

He can rush the puck pretty well, has an accurate shot and makes a good first pass. I think there is definitely potential there.

by Godd Till on Oct 22, 2008 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, potential is there. But with how he’s been utilized so far by the coaching staff, Schenn isn’t getting much of a chance to develop his offensive game with hardly any power play time at all. If he stays up in the NHL, unless Wilson decides to put Schenn in every single situation, there are too many defencemen on the team right now.

My thoughts

Unfortunately, I’ve only seen some of these guys.

Luca Sbisa is pretty darn impressive, has shown a lot of poise and looks like he’ll be a clear top-four guy sooner than anyone could have expected (within 2 years). He just looks much calmer in general than a guy like Pietrangelo. In the same way, Luke Schenn has looked pretty good so far. Tough call for Toronto on whether to send him down. With their D depth, I say let him develop his offensive game a bit in the WHL this year. Get that fourth year in like Weber and Phaneuf had.

Pending the word on Patrik Berglund’s injury, he’s my pick to win the Calder. The real deal.

No one has really had a chance to truly see Stamkos yet…explain that one..?

I’ll tell you who has not been good so far. Jordan Staal. He has monstrous physical tools, but, he is showing very little polish to his especially raw game at this point. He’s still obviously quite young, and, as is the point of your blog Mirtle, expectations in Pittsburgh have been a bit skewed with those guys named Crosby and Malkin, BUT, Staal is starting to worry some people in that he might take a bit too long to put it together for him to fit the time table of this Penguins team. If the Pens have to overpay to keep Staal, given the Pittsburgh cap situation, he will be relied upon heavily to produce. Right now, it does not look like he can do that. He is not prepared to center a second line if he has to be relied upon in the least as a playmaker — that part of the game is still much to fast for Jordan Staal.

I was going to say

Very neat to see an Italian on that list! Good for them.

And it’s cool to see that 4 of the players on that list are getting over 20 to 21 minutes of ice time per game, quite impressive indeed.

Sbisa’s actually Swiss; he was only born in Italy.

Schenn looks awfully good. Like a premier defenseman, not just a teenager among men. The kid is going to be incredible 5 years from now, maybe even this year.

Don't be afraid to take a few steps back, but you better keep moving forward.

Boychuk already got sent down, BTW.

Gillies got a point? What the hell… as a Blades fan, I demand that play get reviewed.

Sbisa is the best teenage rookie I’ve seen this year. Great head on his shoulders, very smooth skater, great passer. Very few ups and downs.

Kings Rookies

All 3 youngsters on the Kings are impressive. Don’t count out Simmonds. He’s got toughness and skill and will be seeing lots of ice time on the third line with Frolov and a vastly improved Handzus. Moller is a speedy forward with a lot of promise. But Doughty is by far the best. Sooooooo gooooood!!!!

by kmstiles on Oct 22, 2008 9:45 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Doughty has been very, very good from what I’ve seen. It’ll be interesting if he can keep his plus-minus level and put up some points if he gets Calder consideration.

Seeing a 1980’s birth date was traumatic enough! LOL

I was at the deli buying a sandwich for lunch last week and saw the sign on the counter.

“You must have been born today in 1990 or earlier to buy cigarettes”.

My mind was blown.

No Love for Voracek?

I can’t believe how little attention Voracek is getting – the perils of playing in Columbus? He is pointing like mad with poor man’s ice time. I listed him as my “Other” in Mirtle’s Calder Race post on the old blog. No love there, either – Voracek didn’t get a mention (although there were 57 “Other” votes – some of them must have gone Jake’s way).

Says here Voracek takes the Calder.
