Cherepanov fallout comes quickly for KHL
The KHL issued a press release a few hours ago that announced a whole host of changes for the league, the majority of them to do with medical treatment during games in light of the death of Alexei Cherepanov.
The other major change will see former NHL defenceman Slava Fetisov take over as chairman of the board of directors.
On the medical side of things:
- The director of HC Vityaz and the director of the Vityaz Ice Arena have been disqualified for egregious violations of KHL Championship Regulations. They will no longer work within the League system.
- A commission has further detected violations in the medical arrangements provided for the KHL Championship game between Neftehimik and Spartak. The Neftehimik (Nizhnekamsk) hockey club has been held accountable for the violation in accordance with the established Regulations.
- The Board of Director instructed the KHL Medical Center to immediately introduce a program providing players with a "single electronic medical passport for athletes," which must containing key information about a wide range of medical issues.
- League teams must complete a comprehensive health examination of professional hockey players at appropriate health care institutions by March 30, 2009.
- The Board also adopted changes that will see two ambulances kept on duty at each game.
- The Board adopted a resolution recommending that League teams ensure the presence of professional specialists – cardiologists, ophthalmologists and surgeons – at KHL games.
- A general seminar for KHL team doctors will also shortly be conducted under the aegis of the KHL Medical Center.
- A special KHL commission will complete a full infrastructure inspection at league teams’ schools for children and youth by Dec. 30. Prior to the league’s junior draft, all participating players will now undergo an in-depth medical examination.
You can certainly see the influence of NHL-style medical measures being put into place here.
The KHL also will "begin a full-scale monitoring of players for doping as of February 1, 2009."

It’s always unfortunate when it takes tragedy to anchor reform. But in the grand scheme of things, hopefully it will prevent something like this from happening again.

Chris Simon is most likely going to be the main reason for physical injuries in the KHL. He doesn’t need doping, he just drinks blood

Yeah, for Chris Simon games the KHL should require two ambulances and one police prison-transfer vehicle.
