Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

Here comes Mats

Surprise, surprise — Mats Sundin's getting back on the horse and getting physical. Soon, he'll be in an NHL lineup near you.

And the interesting tidbit about all of this is that the longer he sits, the more teams will be able to fit his sure-to-be gaudy salary under the cap.

Let's say Sundin's going to command about $8-million as a full-season salary. There are 187 days in the NHL regular season when it comes to pay salaries, and they're calculated on a per-day basis.

If Sundin comes back on Jan. 1, there will be 102 days remaining in the season, and a team will be on the hook for about 55 per cent of whatever contract he signs. Using our $8-million example, a team would need about $4.35-million under the salary cap.

If he comes back on Feb. 1, that number drops to $3-million.

And on and on.

The question of where Sundin is going is a tricky one, but there are only 13 teams that currently have $3-million or more available under the cap, and many of those teams would have very little interest in adding a major salary.

Teams that make sense from that group include Vancouver, Colorado and potentially Ottawa, but there are sure to be bidders from other teams that throw bodies overboard (or to the minors) to free up the cash.

It should be interesting.

And the Sabres?

With cap space as the main criterion, and given their early season performance, I’d put Buffalo on that list as well. They’ve got the added attraction of being driving distance from his NA home in Toronto, and maybe wouldn’t feel quite as ‘strange’ as joining the Sens.

The Sabre owners have a reputation for being cheap, but hey, he might even pull in extra fans and sweater sales from the GTA.

Colorado

No thank you, we’re investing all our hopes in the Swedish saviour who goes by the name of Foppa.

Unless they’re both willing to come for 5M total…

we can’t interest you in another Maple Leaf. This one’s actually worth the money…

Sundin has 1.01pts/g where Foppa has 1.25 pts/g. And besides that, I’d pick Foppa with his foot problems over Sundin any day of the week.

but he’s still got Raycroft in net…

Agreed

Plus, since Foppa has said he will only play for Avs and no other, it would look really bad for the organisation if they sign Sudin and not have enough for Foppa.

No matter how much I liked watching Sundin, Foppa’s still my favourite player. I’d choose Foppa over Sundin.

Come on

Really? Foppa is done. No one wants to admit it, least of all him, but at this point to take Foppa over Sundin is a little crazy.

Says a guy who’s team signed Finger for 3.5M. How’s that working out?

Not about the money

No one will be able to buy him, they’ll have to convince him to play for them. No one’s done it so far.

Oh, and I’m still startled by the fact that you’ve put a hockeybuzz.com link in your article. Their next “big breakthrough” story is likely to be:

I heard Phoenix, but I may need to double check my sources.

Cap Central is by far the most accurate and up-to-date salary resource. It has very little to do with Eklund.

I second that. Although it probably wouldn’t hurt to compare the two now that I think of it…

Chip, who runs Cap Central, has some really great inside sources where he gets his info from. I believe it’s quite a bit more accurate in terms of the total cap hit etc.

Thankfully the Pens don’t have the money, just so I can officially rule them entirely out of a deal I figure they’d have no interest in anyways.

1) Sundin is waiting to see which of the teams he has pending offers from is furthest from playoff contention

The uniform in the pic above looks good still on him :)

Too bad he’s shopping for a cup now.
