NHL teams by age

What follows is a ranking of all 30 teams by age, including all players that have appeared in at least one game this season. Detroit gets younger than last season without Dominik Hasek and Chris Chelios (for now) in the lineup, yet they remain the oldest team in the league:

Team Age
1 DET 30.40
2 ANA 30.31
3 NJD 29.65
4 COL 29.64
5 OTT 29.39
6 TBL 28.97
7 CGY 28.79
8 ATL 28.65
9 SJS 28.63
10 BUF 28.58
11 MTL 28.48
12 FLA 28.32
13 CAR 28.30
14 NYI 28.18
15 WSH 28.02
16 BOS 27.89
17 EDM 27.85
18 VAN 27.78
19 TOR 27.71
20 NSH 27.66
21 DAL 27.43
22 PIT 27.30
23 MIN 27.24
24 PHI 27.13
25 STL 27.11
26 NYR 27.08
27 LAK 26.24
28 CBJ 26.08
29 PHX 25.79
30 CHI 25.65

The surprises in there?

How about Atlanta and Buffalo as two of the oldest teams in the league and the Rangers and Flyers as two of the youngest.

The NHL's average age to this point in the season is almost exactly 28 years old, which is where teams like the Islanders, Capitals, Bruins and Oilers all fit in.

The true youth movements aren't all that suprising, however. St. Louis, Los Angeles, Columbus, Phoenix and Chicago are rolling out a ton of rookies this season, especially in the early going. I'll try and break this down by position at some point.

I'll also have a look at NHL teams by size, based on weight, sometime in the next few days. The average NHL player is 203.5 pounds this season, with San Jose coming in as the heaviest team and Detroit as the lightest.

Buffalo gets older

All those young players that blew up after the lockout are now getting to be 25, 26 years old. Of course Teppo Numminen and Craig Rivet on the blueline instead of Mike Weber and Nathan Paetsch skews things a bit too. ;)

I think Teppo skews things a LOT! I think the Sabres are a good age overall, not too young, not too old. We are just like the baby bear’s porridge!

No rookies made Montreal, so everyone is now a year older. The additions vs. subtractions in the offseason probably skew a little older as well (Lang, Laraque, Tanguay in; Smolinski, Streit, Ryder out). When half the team hits UFA next year, they’ll get a bit younger again.

Detroit exchanged Hasek for Conklin and Drake for Hossa, but no actual rookies cracked their lineup, so it’s not surprising to see them still on top.

Question for you, James

What do you think, should the Leafs send Schenn back to the WHL or keep him here in Toronto?

Thankfully the Pens dropped Gary Roberts. The average age for the team went from 74 to 27.3.

Wow. You better hope Gary Roberts doesn’t read that.

We’ve only heard the stories but he certainly appears to have that ability.

And this is pre-Hedican?

Could make the Ducks #1, until Bobby Ryan ever gets the cap space to play.
