Koivu brothers captains together

Hey James,

With Saku being the captain of the Habs, and Mikko currently wearing the C in Minnesota, I got to wondering if brothers have ever captained two teams in the NHL at the same time before. Any idea?

Thanks,
Mike

Off the top of my head, this is something I'd never know, but Michael Russo of the Star Tribune had a great piece on the Koivus squaring off today and it includes this tidbit: "No brothers have been captains at the same time since Brian (St. Louis) and Darryl (Chicago) Sutter from 1982 to 1987."

What I don't know is if the Sutter brothers faced off while they were captains, so there's a bit of a trivia question for buffs out there. One would think the Blues and Chicago would have played each other often back then.

As for the Koivus, Mikko's off to a phenomenal start after scoring 12 assists in his first seven games as the team's first-line centre. He's been a bit under the radar to this point, playing in Jacques Lemaire's stingy system, but I don't think there's much question the younger brother could easily challenge to be the better one over the next few years.

Mikko Koivu's already one of the NHL's top defensive forwards and should be in the running for the Selke Trophy down the line.

Mikko Koivu

Mikko Koivu looked really good in the two Wild games I’ve seen this season…

Sutter captains galore

I don’t have the figure on hand, but as someone who followed that rivalry closely, I can confirm Brian and Darryl faced each other quite often as captains. It got pretty crazy (as did the overlapping timeline) once Brian became Blues coach, Darryl became Hawks coach, and the Blues added Rich (and later Ron) Sutter while the Hawks added Brent.

Also, I’m pretty sure he overlooked another brother captaincy: My memory and NHL G&R Book says Brent and Ron were captains of the Islanders and Flyers at the same time in 1990-91.

Just to clarify my above comment, Brian and Darryl didn’t face off as head coaches in StL-Chi, but Darryl was a Chicago assistant for part of Brian’s Blues coaching tenure. Seemed like there were always Sutters coming and going. Those were the days.

Mikko does, of course, have a significant size advantage on his older brother: 4 inches and 20 pounds – and that’s if you believe Saku is really 5-10.

I've been looking at the sky
