Ducks name Niedermayer captain

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has named four-time Stanley Cup champion Scott Niedermayer team captain. Chris Pronger and Ryan Getzlaf have been named alternate captains for the 2008-09 season. In addition, Rob Niedermayer will serve as an additional alternate captain when necessary.

"Scotty is a tremendous leader and has been for his entire career," said Head Coach Randy Carlyle. "We have several experienced leaders on this team, and we will need them to work as a group in order for us to have success."

No surprise, really.

Teams still without a single captain designated include Atlanta, Buffalo (who will likely rotate), Florida, Los Angeles (who don't even have any alternates at the moment), Minnesota (also likely to rotate) and Toronto.

Expect a few of these to be announced over the next two days.

UPDATE The Kings will name their captain and alternates tomorrow at 10 a.m. on their website.

J.S. Giguere is going to be pissed off now!

Good for him. I dreamed up a convoluted scenario last year where Chris Pronger was yelling at his teammates and then all of a sudden the locker room doors opened and Scott Niedermayer walked in. He then ripped the "C" off Pronger's chest and led the team to victory.

Also, I'm hoping Kopitar gets named captain just so people can't say Jonathan Toews is better because he's a leader, but it'll probably be Brown with Kopitar and Stoll as the A's.

At least in dealing with the officials it should be a dramatic improvement over the Chris Pronger school of charm and captaincy.

I thought the Kings had already named Armstrong captain and Stoll and either Brown or Kopitar as alternates. Am I imagining this? Confusing rumours and speculation with reality?

Teemu Selanne signed a new two-year deal, he's 38-year-old future Hall-of-Famer, Ducks' all time leading scorer, fan favorite number one, great guy but offers tough comments when needed (Sudafed use among NHL players, Beuachemin's fight vs. Iggy...) but this is Burkie's team where you go Canadian or you go home.

Ps. Hopefully Selanne can sit when the team picture is taken. Or maybe he is in top row right corner with Sammu Pahlsson beside him.

Buffalo will be naming their captain later today and Lindy Ruff was on WGR this morning saying that the rotation system is a goner and only one captain will be named.

My guess is Pominville...
