Greene signs extension

The Los Angeles Kings have signed defenseman Matt Greene to a five-year contact extension that will carry into the 2013-14 season, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Greene's been getting quite a bit of ice time for the Kings so far this season and they're apparently happy with his play to this point.

He came to the team along with Jarret Stoll in exchange for Lubomir Visnovsky this summer.

UPDATE Greene's contract is for $2.95-million a season, which seems like an awful lot given his experience and talent level.

As an Oilers fan, I liked Matt Greene. I'd have liked him a lot less at this price.

Wow. So all of the money that the Kings didn't want to give Lubo, they gave to Matt Greene and Jarret Stoll? I have a hard time seeing where they came out further ahead on that.

Gotta love the Kings busting Patrick O'Sullivan's balls about his contract, but Stoll and Greene, who couldn't possibly have more leverage than Sullivan, are given huge paydays.

i liked Greene when he was an Oiler but no question he would have been a bottom pairing defender if he was still an Oiler. Five years at almost 3M means he obviously is overpaid now, but they expect he's going to be worth it after a couple of years. Unfortunately we didn't see any great strides from him when he was an Oiler so I question how he could become a solid shutdown defender with the Kings if he couldn't do it as an Oiler when the Oilers have a great history of finding defensemen who can work their way up the depth chart such as Hejda, Grebeshkov, Gilbert, Staios, and maybe Strudwick this year. All in all I don't think it's a very solid signing. I distinctly remember Ethan Moreau saying in an interview that he was a great guy to have in the locker room, but he didn't know when to stop being funny and take things seriously.
