Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Quote o' the day

"He's a staple as far as Canadian hockey goes. And I grew up watching Coach's Corner, and he serves a purpose. But he really does not know shit about hockey.

"He knows, like, unnecessary facts about putting Sears catalogues on your shin pads."
He's nothing if not entertaining. The Dallas press is lucky to have him.

This is why I cannot wait for Avery's reality show. I am just hoping it's done by the same geniuses who brought me The Surreal Life and Rock of Love.

Mr. Pot meet Mr. Kettle.

It's nice to have a personality like Ocho Cinco or Clinton Portis liven things up in the league but I am not so sure that it's great to have a raging douchebag that should be beaten to a pulp with a bag of doorknobs acting as an ambassador for the league.

He's nothing if not entertaining.

If you had left your commentary to just that sentence, I wouldn't know who you were referring to in all honesty.

On another subject, Avery, who is from Pickering, Ont., and played in the Ontario Hockey League, said a junior hockey player's focus on the game to the exclusion of everything else is "terrible."

"I didn't go to school," he said. "I dropped out at Grade 9. I didn't learn to play the piano. I didn't read Moby Dick. I didn't read anything."

That really should be the quote of the day right there.

Avery nailed Don Cherry to a T.

You want him for beers by the campfire, but stay *** **** away from coaching my Kids.

"I didn't go to school," he said. "I dropped out at Grade 9. I didn't learn to play the piano. I didn't read Moby Dick. I didn't read anything."

What that ass didn't learn would fill a book...which he wouldn't be able to read.

That's hilarious, and probably the first time Avery has ever done or said anything that brought a smile to my face.

It's hard to disagree on the same day Grapes makes completely baseless comments about Ovechkin: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/2008/10/02/6952546-sun.html

Why is Avery still angry that Rachel Hunter left him for Jarret Stoll? Get over it already.
And next time go young. Some high school dumb blonde who can't read either. She'll think that you're as great as you think you are.

Not for nothing, but Avery IS right about junior hockey players needing to learn something other than hockey.

Not for nothing, but Avery IS right about junior hockey players needing to learn something other than hockey.

The ones that don't make it as pros usually wind up turning to Canadian collegiate. The U of C Dinos have had a steady stream of ex-Hitmen join them over the last few years, including two this year, in Ryan Gillen (mom's coworker's nephew, enrolled in business) and Brock Nixon (in my home faculty of kinesiology).

The CHL puts a lot of emphasis on education and most clubs seriously support it (tricked-out busses with wireless internet for example). If Avery didn't learn anything, it's not the junior hockey system that failed him - clearly he failed himself. As doogiek2 said, CIS hockey is full of CHL grads courtesy of the education program offered to the kids.

In between the 70 game schedule, practices, travel, and billeting with a strange family, I'm sure there's lots of time for these teenagers to learn about life outside of hockey.

Yeah, poor kids. I can only imagine the mental and physical rigors Certain Nameless Moose Jaw Warriors faced when, having the choice between doing a Psychology 20 project in cooperation with me, or having me do it myself, and going to a house party and urinating on passed out girls, faced. Such a cruel existence.

Bitter? Sure. But at least I got him like a 73 on a project he came up with, about Peter Forsberg and Sports Injury?

Oh, and then he got drafted. Oh, and now he plays in the NHL.

Avery was on point with just about everything he said.

Cherry is an idiot, we all know that. We watch just to see what he'll say next. His play analysis is pretty repetitive, "See this guy (normally Tucker or Roberts) try real hard? See this defenseman put his stick in the way and screw up the goaltender?"

As far as the comment on junior hockey players, he's pretty right about that too. If you've ever gone to school with some of these idiots, you know that all they do is cheat and lie their way to a passing grade. The large majority of them were knuckleheads.
