Sabres claim Ellis

Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have claimed LW Matt Ellis off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings.

Ellis (8/31/1981, 6’, 207 lbs.) split last season between Detroit and Los Angeles, picking up eight points (3+5) in 54 games. He started the season with the Red Wings, but was claimed off waivers by the Kings on February 21/08. Ellis has eight points in 70 career NHL games.

There are a ton of players on the waiver wire at the moment, as teams trim their rosters down to the 23-man limit in preparation for the season's actual start next Thursday. Few are being claimed, which is why this move by Buffalo is a bit curious.

My guess is Ellis is seen as a replacement up front for Paul Gaustad, who will miss a few weeks after injuring a thumb in a fight in preseason on Sunday. Even still, with the glut of talented youth up front, one would think the Sabres would be the last team looking to pull someone out of the bargain bin.

Ellis is pretty mediocre, a career 5th liner. He was fine on the Grand Rapids Griffins, but will never be able to fill any meaningful minutes at the NHL level. I'm kinda surprised to see him getting talked about here. I guess he's perfectly able to fill minutes when your team is facing a rash of injuries though, as long as you don't expect too much... and is supposed to be a great guy in the dressing room, so I wish him well.

This does not make sense.

Is there a rule that when a team picks a guy up on waivers he has to remain with the team for a certain amount of time?

If not, this is probably a move for Buffalo to fill out their Portland affiliate. Right now they are pretty thin at the AHL level, there's barely enough guys tabbed for Portland to fill out a starting lineup. The Sabres and Kings were pretty chummy at the draft, so maybe the Kings agreed not to reclaim him when he gets sent down. That's all I can figure on this move.
