Decision '09: Let the wacky fan voting begin

The 2009 all-star game is a big, big deal for the NHL, given it's being tied in with the Canadiens' centennial season and that there are sure to be plenty of Habs in the lineup.
Not that that's put the brakes on any "Vote For Rory" type campaigns from cropping up.
Voting at vote.nhl.com officially opened within the past hour or so, and as you can see, the website is remarkably different than in previous online outings. Registration is required, and there are a few more screens to click through to get your votes in there. My guess is they've made alterations that will make automated voting impossible, but I suppose we'll see.
You can, however, vote over and over and over again.
There's also a stipulation that reads "To be eligible for the 2009 All-Star team, a player must have played 20 games by January 2, 2009" — which eliminates Rory Fitzpatrick right off the bat.
The two big write-in campaigns that I've seen so far involve one player in the Western Conference and one in the East: Devin Setoguchi for the Sharks, who's having a bangup year, and Niclas Wallin for the Hurricanes, who's been pretty solid on their backend (albeit as the fourth defenceman).
Here's a look at campaign headquarters:

The Setoguchi Saga Continues [Fear The Fin]
and
Vote Wallin [voteforwallin.com]
Vote in Wallin [red and black hockey]
Vote for Wallin? Vote for Wallin! [Luke DeCock]
Put me on the record as fully behind both camps. I've already submitted my vote, and Mr. Setoguchi and Mr. Wallin were on the ballot.
The results are going to be here, so keep checking back. I'm logged in here right in the very early, early hours of the process, and right now Wallin is listed as eighth in Eastern Conference defencemen voting with 50 votes. Setoguchi's not yet on the radar in the West.
At the moment, Bruins and Habs fans are stuffing the ballot box the best. Tim Thomas, a write-in candidate, leads all players by a long shot with more than 1,000 votes and is certainly a deserving entry given his start. (His campaign, while not quite so wacky, is based on this Facebook page.) The top four defencemen in the East are Bruins or Habs, while the top three forwards in the conference are all from Montreal.
Thomas is getting hundreds of votes every few minutes right now, meaning there are, in fact, hardcore hockey fans in Boston.
Something tells me that this year's starting lineups are going to be the wackiest ever.
UPDATE Twenty minutes later, and all six starting positions in the East are Canadiens players, likely a result of the new "Team Vote" feature whereby fans can automatically vote for only their favourite team's players automatically.
How dominant have Montreal fans been? Jaroslav Halak is the third ranked goalie at the moment, two spots behind No. 1 Carey Price.
The Setoguchi and Wallin campaigns aren't having much luck, but Coyotes defenceman Keith Yandle and Bruins banger Milan Lucic have come on strong. (And I'm sure this will be out of date another 20 minutes from now.)
One more note on automated voting before I turn in for the night. From the rulebook:
13. How many times can I vote?
You can vote as many times as you like via the internet or text message during the Promotion Period (as defined in #3 above). However, the NHL will have in place monitoring procedures designed to prevent individuals from unfairly influencing the outcome of the voting by generating significant blocks of votes using technical enhancements. The NHL reserves the right to disqualify, block or remove any votes from any individual who votes by any electronic, mechanical or automated means, or otherwise tampers with the vote process, or for any other reason that would have the effect of unfairly influencing the outcome of the voting process, as determined by the NHL in their sole discretion.
Call it the Rory clause.
UPDATE It's 2:30 in the morning and the site's crashed, likely due to the volume of traffic they were receiving all at once. Hilarious.

That 20 game rule means that some players the NHL put on the ballot like Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney will not be eligible.
How is that for disorganized – they put players on the ballot who will very predicatbly not be eligible by their own rules.

As of right now, Cal Clutterbuck is in the top forwards for the west. Funny.

While I support more than one Hab in the starting lineup (there is definitely deserving candidates), that new “Team Vote” feature is screaming “We need 6 Habs in the starting lineup” without the NHL explicitly doing it itself.
If this wasn’t the meaningless All-Star game, I probably would care a little more. Still doesn’t make it right.
Hey, at least we’re better than baseball. We don’t award home ice in the Stanley Cup to the side that wins the game.

Vote for Teppo!
You can add Vote For Teppo to your campaigns, I’m running it from my site (linked in my sig). Looks like it’ll be tough sledding agains the Habs fans, though.

Let’s assume that the voting holds up as it has in the very early returns and we get a 6 Montreal Canadien strating lineup. Assuming the 21 player roster we have seen in the last few all star games and assuming the one player per team must be in the all star game rule, that leaves only 15 roster spots for the 14 other East Conference teams. Now that could leave some very deserving All Stars on the sidelines. Let’s say that (for example) Malkin and Crosby of Pittsburgh are the team with two all stars (besides Montreal) in the east. That would mean (assuming players continue to perform at their current rate) that one of Ovechkin and Semin and one of Ryan Miller and Vanek (and a few other cases of teams with two players playing well) would not be in the All Star Game.
I really shouldn’t care much about Habs fans (or anyone else) stuffing the ballot box. I do care if it means some of the best players in the game get left out of all star game as a result. And that seems like the logical conclusion to things in the Habs six are the starting lineup.

At least in the case of Miller and Vanek....
I find it likely that Vanek would be the one that’s snubbed there. The East goaltending, especially with Brodeur out, will most likely consist of Price, Miller, and Lundqvist. Could someone like Tim Thomas sneak in there? It’s possible.
But my educated guess would be that Vanek gets the snub out of necessity. But hey, if it means more Saku Koivu, I’m all for it.

Punishment
This is punishment for voting Campbell in 2 years ago, isn’t it?

Neither Crosby or Ovechkin is in the top 10 for forwards as of 10:25 EST.
But 6 Habs are. This is a bigger joke than Vote for Rory.

Quit it!
People who complain about All-Star votes are just as lame as those who stuff the ballot box with players from their favourite teams. Quit moaning about “injustices” about players being lower on the lists than you’d like to see… it’s a popularity contest, not a survey of who the fans think is the top 12 players in the game are.
I’d like to put this plea out to my fellow Habs fans though… 4 of the players you are voting for are unrestricted free agents in July. Voting for them is validation of their popularity amongst the fans, and can be used as leverage in negotiations. I’d like to keep all 4 guys if at all possible, so quit voting up Komisarek, Tanguay, and Kovalev please! Saku deserves all the love, though. I won’t ask you to quit voting for him.
Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Blame the Bruins fans
Maybe they’re voting for Thomas, Chara, and any Hab that’s a UFA…

That’s why I’m not doing the text message vote for all Sabres thing – Roy doesn’t deserve it. Teppo, I have a soft spot in my heart for him (his was repaired) as he’s my son’s favorite player and I just love his enthusiasm after everything he’s gone through.

I’m starting a “Vote for Filip” campaign here. Write him in!

"What write in candidate would you vote for?"
You missed one answer, James – NONE. The Vote for Rory campaign two years ago was brilliant both for being spontaneous and for having the legs to last. It also gave conspiracy theorists a lot to talk about when the final results were in.
These wannabe copycat campaigns offer no real reason to support them, and simply can’t because they are copycats. Vote Wallin? No thanks.

Good point. Thomas has been one of the best goalies in the league, though.
