Bruins cruise to top of standings
It was a pretty wild one in Boston last night, where the Bruins ran the Habs out of the rink with four unanswered goals to start the game.
In terms of projected standings, Boston is now the first-place team in the Eastern Conference, which is pretty incredible/unexpected. They're one of the top-10 scoring teams in the league and allowing only two goals a game defensively, with both Tim Thomas and Manny Fernandez playing excellent.
The Bruins were one of the lowest-scoring teams in the NHL to make the playoffs last season, but the big difference this time around has been their depth on offence, with Marc Savard, Marco Sturm, Phil Kessel, Milan Lucic and Blake Wheeler all on pace for 25 or more goals.
Is anyone talking about the Bruins yet?

Tangentially related, can we start a campaign to ban Jack Edwards from calling NHL games? Dude’s embarrassing.

Habs finished first last year because they won all 8 games against Boston, who ended up at the 8th spot. that’s the only reason habs finished first in the east.
During the playoffs, some young guns came out, especially Lucic. Tim Thomas was incredible and i knew 2008-2009 was going to be hard for Montreal, just because of the bruins. HABS are overrated this year.
Go habs Go! but Boston is a great team to watch. I only hope Michael Ryder gets his share of points this year.

If Toronto keeps hanging in there, the Northeast is brutally difficult this season.

PGH?
That’s a new one for a Pittsburgh abbreviation.

PGH is fairly common outside the sports community.

All odds were against Boston lastnight:
Price was a career 6-0 against Boston in the regular season.
12 game losing streak was on the line.
Boston didn’t get home until 3:00a.m. that day after the game in Chicago, that was started late because of the Pilote/Magnusson #3 retirement, it also went into overtime and a shootout.

Minor quibble
“Unanswered” means just that: there was no reply, no answer. The Canadiens did indeed answer, once, before the pounding resumed. Therefore, the four goals were not unanswered: they were consecutive.
Sorry, it’s a major pet peeve of mine, and sports journalists and broadcasters do it all the damned time.

I don’t care how early it is in the season… it’s just nice to see the Kings listed in a playoff spot.

They are not in a playoff spot. Mirtle has it listed as points/game. They’re actually in 10th place.

That win last night was the biggest thing to happen to Bruins fans since Ray Bourque brought the Cup back home after winning it in Colorado in 2001.

That fight probably showed why Komisarek spends so much of his time hiding behind refs.
