Penguins acquire Boucher from Stars
The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Darryl Sydor from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Philippe Boucher.
"Darryl is a proven veteran defenseman who brings a great deal of character and leadership abilities to our group," said Co-General Manager Les Jackson. "He is obviously a player we are very familiar with and we are excited to welcome him back to the Stars. On the other side of the coin, we thank Philippe Boucher for everything he’s done for the Dallas Stars organization the last few years, and we wish him the best with the Penguins."
>> team release
A very nice pickup for the Penguins, provided Boucher can find his game again. He's been fine defensively but has only three assists in 16 games this season. Boucher played only 38 games last seasons due to shoulder surgery.
Sydor, meanwhile, has been a bit part for Pittsburgh for a while now, and at 36 has only played eight games this season in a depth role. He has a long history with the Stars organization, and that's likely why they make the move, but the Penguins get the best player in this deal.
Both players make $2.5-million this season and will be UFAs in July. Boucher's a year younger at 35 but has battled injuries far more than Sydor in his career.
UPDATE Here's Mark Stepneski over at Andrew's Dallas Stars Page:
"I don’t think this is a bad deal for the Stars. It doesn’t really help on the cap because Boucher and Sydor are both making the same amount, but the change of scenery might do both players good. Sydor was in the doghouse in Pittsburgh for what ever reason. He wasn’t playing much and he comes to a team he knows well and the team knows him. There should be a comfort level here for Sydor. He’s a leadership guy and a heart and soul guy and this team could use that right now considering the start they’ve had. He’s still a good player. Not the overall player he was five years ago, but still a good, smart defender who can clean up stuff around the net."
Mark doesn't see this as much of big deal, although I think it's worth noting that the Stars are subtracting a player that logged considerable minutes and really wasn't a defensive liability this season. Boucher led all Dallas defenders in goals against per minute at 5-on-5 this season (although they've certainly kept him away from top opposition).
Frank at Pensburgh, meanwhile, likes the move given how little Sydor was contibuting under Michel Therrien.

I’m all for it. Sydor struck me as a guy who was miserable with a lesser role anyways. I don’t now if he’ll necessarily get more time in Dallas, but I’m sure heading ‘home’ doesn’t disparage things one bit. As I mentioned in my post, it’s really ironic because the FSN announcers had Darryl Sydor join them in the booth last night to discuss the game.

Adding to the argument that the Penguins got the better player, Boucher has played an average ice time of 21:43 in 16 games for Dallas – the third most on the team. And recently, the opposition hasn’t been lighting it up when Boucher was on the ice: a combined -1 over 5 games isn’t terrible (I know misleading stat, but still). Anyway, provided he stays healthy, the Penguins now have a 20 minute veteran to help stabilize their unit (and to stop giving Rob Scuderi an average of 20:02 a game). Having more guys who can play those kind of minutes is generally a good thing.
Sydor only got 14:23 over 8 games; so the real question now for the Stars is how will they replace Boucher’s minutes. I doubt that Sydor will take them, so I wonder if it means Niksanen or Grossman will get a larger role.

I wonder if Zubov’s return will play a factor in some more minutes as well. He’s put up a few points since returning and may take on a bigger role as well. If I’m not mistaken Niskanen picked up a lot of time on the top line last season when Zubov went down in the second half of the season. If I had to guess I’d say Sydor will log a healthy 15 minutes a game in Dallas, but that’s just speculation. I’ll be the first to admit that outside of the occasional reading at Andrew’s Stars I’m not exactly in-the-know with Dallas news.

Unfortunately, I doubt the ridiculous love affair with Rob Scuderi will ever cool off.

Scuderi’s among the best on the Pens for blocking shots. Of course, both he and Mark Eaton block a shot and are listed “day-to-day” afterwards, but at least they block em.

Too bad it’s about his only skill. :(

Boucher
I’ve wanted the Stars to trade Boucher ever since he signed his latest contract for under market value two years ago. His value was sky high coming off a 19 goal season from the blue line, and you just knew he would never come close to recreating that season.
Unfortunately they waited until his value had plummeted so greatly to trade him. Boucher has really not been good at all this season for the Stars… I know his ice time would suggest otherwise but I can tell you from watching him that he is a shell of his former self. He has been a big reason why the Stars’ penalty kill has struggled so much this season. Hopefully for the Pens he can find some of his game back, because he has it in him to be a number three type defenseman.
Stars fans just hope Sydor can come in and rediscover the chemistry he had with Zubov for so many years. If not, we’ll be seeing a lot more of Doug Janik and Mark Fistric.

Yeah, I forgot to mention it, but Boucher’s PK numbers are horrible. I think his injury problems have finally caught up with him a little.

I have to think that the driving reason for this trade was that Boucher will get a new contract next year and Sydor will probably not. I don’t know what else Dallas gets in this deal, just a little less of a headache next summer. That’s what cap-ceiling exposure can do to a team, i think.

It might also be some insurance for the Pens too if they are looking to move someone during the deadline or perhaps work out some sort of package deal. Throwing an able-bodied defenseman into the mix who can probably sign on for cheap next season may help a team or two out there.

Dallas got a lot out of Sydor in the good ol’ days when he was paired with Zubov, so I guess they’re taking a chance that he’s still got “it.”
