Stastny signs five-year extension

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has signed 22-year-old center Paul Stastny to a five-year contract extension beginning with the 2009-2010 season.

"Paul has clearly established himself as one of the bright young stars emerging in our game today," said Avalanche Executive Vice President & General Manager Francois Giguere. "At a young age, he’s demonstrated tremendous skill, vision and composure on the ice and is recognized as one of the most complete players in our league.

"We’re pleased that Paul will remain with the Colorado Avalanche franchise long-term. This is another sign of our ownership’s commitment to winning."

Adrian Dater from the Denver Post will likely have the terms any time now.

Stastny is a phenomenal player, someone who, I think, doesn't get quite the credit he deserves as he's played for an Avalanche team that hasn't been nearly as high profile the past two years as previously. He's posted a point a game throughout his 164-game career to this point, and at 22, leads the team in scoring and is second in ice time (21:22) to only John-Michael Liles.

I imagine this is a pretty hefty extension, but Stastny's shown to be a top-line player so far.

UPDATE Nick Kypreos said on Sportsnet that the deal is $6.6-million per season, which is about what you'd expect. Anze Kopitar signed for $6.8-million per on a longer term with the Kings, but Stastny's the stronger player at this point.

Pretty good deal for a franchise player in this day and age. The Avs couldn’t afford to let this guy go without sacrificing the next 5-10 years.

Solid numbers for both salary and length. I’m very happy!

Hmm, wonder what effect this will have on the Gaborik situation? Maybe he’ll realize that he’s not going to be getting $9M per year for 8 years.

Although Gaborik’s older and a pending UFA. If anything, his injury’s what’s really going to limit his earning potential.

His lack of work effort and responsibility in the defensive end sure isn’t going to help either.

Heading east

Which is why he fits in perfectly in the East. Frankly, I don’t care that he doesn’t play defense. I’d put him on a line with Koivu and Brunette/Nolan and let him cherry-pick all night long, but I’m not Jacques Lemaire.

It was pretty obvious the amount of his contract was gonna match Kopitar’s within 10% as soon as Kopitar signed.
The time is a bit less, but there’s people who are positive about that and people who are negative about it.
The contract eats up 1 year of UFA and I would’ve liked to see another contract in between.

What do you think James?

Is Stastny the future captain on the Avalanche?

Us Avs fans have only known one captain. And having to come to terms with the realization that Sakic will be done soon, the future leadership of this franchise is in question. Who else will take over if not Stastny? Foote is almost done too. Smyth could take the captaincy for a while but not for very long (not to what we are used too).

Maybe us Avs fans are spoiled but, we haven’t really seen Stastny “take over” a game or force a win. Not like Sakic and Forsberg (and to some extent Drury) did.

and having to come to terms with the realization that Sakic will be done soon

I am SO not ready to do that yet. So from now on, every time anyone says that I’ll plug my ears and start screaming!

Yes, I think Stastny is a future captain. Maybe not immediately after Sakic, but by the end of this deal for sure.
