Nylander deal nears for Chicago

Though a team spokesman denied a trade had been made moments before Thursday's game against the Dallas Stars, there were signs that something was in the works to acquire Michael Nylander of the Washington Capitals. Forward Dustin Byfuglien came out on the ice for the morning skate and promptly was sent back to the locker room. He had left American Airlines Center before the brief workout was over.

Asked about Byfuglien's sudden departure, coach Joel Quenneville said, ''We should know more later,'' and wouldn't comment further.

Byfuglien and veteran defenseman Brent Sopel were surprise scratches for the game.

Japers' Rink has some discussion on the potential deal, which has been rumoured so much lately that it seems all but done at this point. The salaries of the players on both sides nearly lineup, although cap-space strapped Washington would have to take on additional salary.

That leads me to believe a third team could be involved here.

Interestingly enough, however, Nylander is currently in the lineup in the game against the Kings, and just picked up an assist on Brooks Laich's goal. I'm guessing the Caps brass simply have their fingers crossed that he won't be hurt tonight.

Confusion in Chicago

I watched a good amount of Blackhawks games last season and besides Kane, Toews, and Sharp the core of this team also included Lang and Byfuglien.

I know their goaltending situation has them close to the cap, but I am really confussed about what they are doing. They traded Lang away for almost nothing. At least this deal looks to give them something in return.

Tallon’s trying to save his bacon, for one thing.

Part of the reason I am glad that Buffalo’s front office has so little turnover. There is no reason for the GM to make a move with anyting but the team’s interest in mind. In fact I think this is a big part of the problem in Toronto.

The Blackhawks are on a pace for 105 points and a finish second in the division and the number five seed in the playoffs. Why trade away a player like Byfuglien who they seem so high on, either at defense or as a forward? This makes no sense. They don’t need a shake-up, they just need to gain experience playing together as a team.

1) That deal would make no sense for Washington salary cap-wise. Perhaps where there is smoke…,but it seems all the various trade rumors require an awful lot of things to take place to get a deal done here
2) Nylander has a no movement clause. he’d have to agree to be traded. Perhaps he would under the right circumstances, but in mid season it won’t be an easy sell
3) The Capitals are right against the cap limit. Literally 190K away! So any potential deal can NOT bring back ‘additional salary’.
4) How many teams (including Chicago) would want Nylander’s salary/cap hit of 4.5 million for another 2 1/2 seasons?? They also have cap issues. A third team is possible, but that seems awfuly complicated for a mid season deal. Guess we’ll hear soon.

Cap space

Perhaps the Caps are planning to waive or otherwise unload Sopel and get some cap relief out of the deal? Otherwise this looks pretty straightforward: Chicago wants another top-six forward (and can move Sharp back to the wing) and Washington needs some depth on defence.

It’s complicated for the Caps to waive or give Sopel away for nothing to another team?

not at all.

the Caps can send Sopel down to Hershey and call up Alzner. perfect scenario. or if he gets picked up on waivers, they still can call up Karl. trade him for a low pick and call up Alzner. either way the deal would free up enough money to bring Alzner up to the big club so I am for it as the D needs all the help it can get.
