Ovechkin: A scorer not a fighter

Thought this was a funny little tidbit at the end of the game between the Ducks and Capitals earlier this week:

Both teams' emotion level escalated in the third period, to the point where Ryan had to be restrained from going after Ovechkin after one shift.

"Maybe he was pissed off," Ovechkin said of Ryan. "I told him it's not my job to fight. It's my job to score goals."

Which made me lookup if Ovechkin had, in fact, received a fighting major in his 262-game NHL career. According to hockeyfights.com, there was one:

Right. Not a fighter.

Ovie did fight Mike Richards before as well. I think he’s right, he does suck at fighting.

Yeap, although that was in a preseason game I’m pretty sure.

To paraphrase Harry Neale

One goes for throwing, the other receiving.

Am i the only one who didn’t see him fight in that clip? He knocked Briere down from behind…he got jumped..and then the linesmen were on top of them.

Ovechkin may not like to fight…but he does like to run guys from behind. He’s done it or tried to do it quite a few times to Malkin, and occasionally to Crosby when the Caps play the Pens.

Right, and the referees have just never noticed?

Oh look – yet another Pens fan who thinks his team’s stars should be exempt from contact. Isn’t that cute?
