Frost found not guilty
David Frost was found not guilty Friday of sexual exploitation following a trial at which prosecutors alleged the former junior hockey coach exerted such control over his players that he took part in threesomes with them and their young girlfriends.
Mr. Frost was charged with four counts of sexual exploitation relating to his time as a coach of the junior A Quinte Hawks team in eastern Ontario in 1996 and 1997.
This is not a surprise; everyone I talked to in the hockey media about this case felt the allegations against Frost were on very shaky ground given many former players' refusal to say much of anything.
As I said on this post earlier in the month, "Frost may not be guilty of anything illegal, but he almost certainly should never have been the guardian and coach of teenagers living away from home."
I hope this case makes junior leagues even more vigilant in protecting young players, because there are still a lot of kids falling through the cracks. Graham James and David Frost aren't the only ones.

It's sad...
…but an appallingly common theme in sexual abuse/assault cases that the victim is either too scared or too ashamed to come forward.
I honestly wonder what it would take to change that thought process. Is it a cultural thing here in North America — wasn’t that long ago that date rape wasn’t taken very seriously — or a raw intimidation thing?

I think it's more often shame in North America ...
… and more often raw intimidation in other countries that have a tradition of “honor killings” such as some in Asia.
I think a lot of the stigma of women being raped by a stranger is gone, but there is still a lot of “she must have led him on” if a woman knows the assailant. The problem with date rape is often the woman was drugged and doesn’t remember exactly who raped her. I know I’d think long and hard about if the headache and character assasination was worth it if something like that ever happened to me – it might be easier to just try to live with it afterwards, depending on a lot of factors. When you toss in homophobia the situation gets even more confused especially where young people are concerned.
I think the most important step would be an awareness of how often it happens, instead of just blocking it out because it’s ugly and makes people uncomfortable. Exploitation has never been wished away before in human history. Maybe as victims realize they aren’t alone, they will find more support in telling the truth because there are others who will understand what they went through. It’s harder to speak up if you think your voice is the only one, and most people don’t have that kind of courage.
It just makes me sick at heart. :(
