The Rangers' success: Is it the juice?

One of the really strange things that's started happening lately due to this blog is an incredible interest from P.R. and marketing firms in what gets posted here. I'm getting offers, every week, to write about hockey books, videos, tickets, events, MP3 players, etc., just for having this site.

Last week, a company called Nike Communications in New York mailed me four eight ounce bottles of cherry juice in a great big cardboard box.

It's called CherryPharm, and apparently it's caught on in the hockey world.

The press release says: "The New York Rangers were the first professional athletes to start drinking a new tart cherry juice as part of their daily training regimen. Thanks to a growing body of literature providing indirect evidence on the beneficial effects of cherries for various inflammatory conditions, the team's medical staff hoped that it could help with the rigors of the NHL season — and they have been pleased with the results."

Jim Ramsay, the head trainer for the Rangers, has a good P.R. quote in there, too: "The New York Rangers have integrated the proven benefits of CherryPharm's all-natural juice into the lives of our players — we feel less sore, sleep better and recover faster."

I heard that Wolverine drinks it, too.

The "Trainer's Tip of the Week" feature ran only once on the Rangers' website, and it, too, espoused the benefits of the magic juice.

I'm not much of a food critic, so here's the good and the bad:

The Good: It's pretty tasty and definitely healthy. I imagine it is actually probably one of the best things out there to drink in terms of good-for-you-ness.

The Bad: As you can imagine, this stuff is expensive. Unless they're airmailing it to you to write about on your blog, the $11 a litre price tag is likely to throw you off. The eight ounce bottles I was sent are selling for roughly $2.50 apiece on their website.

The Verdict: Welch's grape juice is terrific for you at a quarter of the price and, unlike a lot of juices out there, has zero added sugar. I drink it everyday.

Then again, I'm not 10-3-1.

On a lighter note ...

One of the better posts I’ve read in a while, James. Not to say your others haven’t been up to snuff—far, far from it—but this one just hit the right chord this afternoon. CherryPharm … sounds more like a colony of virgins than it does a drink. (Hmmm … is that a little too off-colour?)

Love those marketers

I love Mad Men but hate marketing. How’s that for a juxtaposition?

I study this stuff for a living so I can provide a little insight. All fruits and vegetables have unique beneficial nutritional compounds called flavanoids in them. Cherries have a distinct flavanoid profile in them, but that doesn’t mean cherry juice is any better for you than grape juice, blueberry juice, etc etc. Heck even coffee and hoppy beer are good for you. A well balanced diet, including DIFFERENT fruits and vegetables is key to maintaining health.

I also love Welch's

I can provide a mailing address for a case of juice.

It’s always cool to get into the office in the morning and discover the Google Alert with someone else covering us.
No hard sell here – just wanted to address a couple comments – and open the door to any questions.

1) Re: expensive – Our product is a 100% not from concentrate juice – so our raw materials are 50 cherries a bottle – that’s not cheap… but it’s a lot less expensive than going to the store and buying 50 whole tart cherries every day (assuming they were in season all year) Also – you can get shipping for free – so it about $2.08/bottle.

ChicoMaki – Not a colony in VA :) “Cherry” is the fruit, “Pharm” is pharmacognosy, the study of medicinal effects from natural compounds.

SDWingNut – Agreed- marketers do make some outlandish claims… For us, the difference is all the REAL clinical trial behind the product – there is no FDA disclaimer on our bottles. And I also couldn’t agree more – a balanced diet is the key – but there are some UNIQUE compounds inside tart cherries, that when not concentrated, have some amazing impacts on muscle recover, pain, and other things.
