Brodeur to miss up to four months
Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur will have surgery Thursday morning to repair a torn distal biceps tendon in his left elbow and will miss three to four months, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said this morning.
Lamoriello said Brodeur is expected to make a full recovery and should make it back in time for the end of the regular season.
It's hard to imagine a more devastating injury for any team in the league than for the Devils to lose Brodeur.
Three months will take him until early February; four will mean he's out until March. Either way, Kevin Weekes is going to be the team's go-go goalie, and he has hardly played the past four seasons. Postlockout, Weekes has played just 3,044 minutes, the equivalent of about 50 games, and he hasn't been a starter since 2003-04 with Carolina.
For the first time in 15 years, Brodeur won't be New Jersey's starter, and that's an interesting situation indeed.
One would think Lou Lamoriello will now pursue another goaltender, but the Devils can only really free up Brodeur's salary until he comes back, and that might create a trick situation three or four months from now. New Jersey has about $2-million to work with under the cap and could foreseeably fit someone like Dwayne Roloson in with some minor manoeuvring.
They're saying on the radio here in Toronto that last night's 2-0 loss to Buffalo was just the ninth game Brodeur has missed due to injury in his career. Obviously that number's about to make a jump.
Lamoriello's said he doesn't feel the need to trade for another goaltender, although consider that just a vote of confidence for Weekes: "Injuries are part of the game," Lamoriello said. "There's no question Martin Brodeur is an integral part of our team. This is where other people have opportunities. Other people have to step up, but you don't approach it any other way. I still feel strongly about our team."
Fire & Ice will be following this all day.

Weekes
looked good last night against Buffalo but I wouldn’t rely on him for the entire season. It will be interesting to see what the Devils do but I would think they would try to get someone to rely on in the absence of Brodeur.

I don’t think the outcome of this poll would be any different if you’d left that “without Brodeur” part out of the equation

Start the goalie rumour mill
Habbyboulin to the devils
Halak to the devils to make room for french goalie
Cujo to the devils to make room for Pogge
Biron to the Devils to help Jersey miss the playoffs
Gerber to the Devils- see above
None of these trades will happen but its fun to stir it up.
Roloson to the Devils might actually happen

You can never
write off the Devils. I thought they were done as an elite team when they lost Stevens, Niedermayer and Daneyko.
And I thought the same when they lost Gomez.
They find a way to get ‘er done. I think they’ll be fine w/o Marty because above all else, Jersey plays their system, regardless of who’s on the ice or between the pipes.
Of course his loss hurts. It hurts bad. But Jersey always manages to persevere.

Never have counted them out. They still have an underrated defence. And a potent offence up front this year. Injuries are hurting them (Rolston, Holik, now Brodeur), but they will still make the playoffs

I agree. This drops them down, but they should still be a low-seeded playoff team. If Weekes doesn’t get it done early, Loophole Lou will bring someone in.

I'm kind of hoping
That Lou decides he’s had enough out of Kevin Weekes and decides to play goalie himself.

I'd like to see that
… and the next cap loophole he “navigates” (“Bryce! How are ya’? Ever been to Kiev?”) to make it happen.

This could kill a very good season for whichever higher seeded team draws the 6/7/8 Devils.

Weekes look great in his first game. A loss, but I wouldn’t blame that on him

Lots of people talking about finding someone but give Weekes his shot. Lets be honest, Marty is a 3rd D-man for them, will play the puck and have his defenders break the other way and hit them with a pass. With Weekes, its not going to be like that. It’s the reason they struggled in the first the other night against the Sabres. Once they figured out how to play with Weekes, shots were down in the 2nd and 3rd. I truly believe NJ will be just fine.
