Lightning recall unpronounceable players
The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled center Paul Szczechura (sha-HER-uh) and left wing Radek Smolenak (SMOH-leh-nak) from Norfolk of the American Hockey League, it was announced by Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian Lawton.
Szczechura, 23, leads Norfolk in scoring this season with 11 goals and 24 points in 23 games. A 5-foot-11, 190-pound native of Brantford, Ontario, Szczechura was signed as a free agent by the Lightning on April 24, 2008. He played four collegiate seasons at Western Michigan from 2003-04 through 2006-07, recording 44 goals, 86 assists and 107 penalty minutes in 153 games. He was voted the CCHA’s smartest player in 2005-06 in the annual captain’s poll.
Szczechura played his first full AHL season in 2007-08 splitting the season between Iowa and Norfolk. In 24 games with the Admirals he tallied 14 goals and 26 points after managing only two goals and five points in 29 games with Iowa.>> team release

Slavic language lesson of the day
Szcz is one character in Cyrillic, and pretty much pronounced all together at once. It’s one of those ones you have to hear to get the subtleties of, but just treat it as a “sh” for the purposes of pronunciation.
