NHL: Revenues to increase 2 per cent

The NHL projects a 2 percent increase in league revenue for the 2008-09 season despite facing one of the worst economic crises to hit North America since the league contracted from 10 to six franchises around the time of the Great Depression

League officials shared the projection with owners and team executives at a board of governors meeting in Florida Dec. 8-9. According to attendees, league revenue will increase 6 percent in aggregate, but because of the decline in the Canadian dollar the league will realize only a 2 percent increase in total revenue.

— Tripp Mickle, SportsBusiness Journal

Mickle has the projected revenue figure for next season at $2.65-billion (U.S.), a number that would move the cap slightly up. Using the calculation for the midpoint and some fudged figures:

(56.75% x $2.65-billion) - $70-million
30 NHL teams

The first number is the players' percentage of revenues, the second the revenue figure provided by the SBJ and the third is player benefits. Using these numbers, the midpoint would be roughly 47.8-million, the floor $39.8-million and the cap $55.8-million (or about $1-million lower than this season).

The cap could also be boosted by the 5-per-cent bump at the NHLPA's request, bringing it to just more than $58-million. Based on the info we have now, that's what we're looking at: A cap between $1-million lower and $1.5-million higher than the current one. It'll be interesting to see GMs plan accordingly.

The Canadian dollar, meanwhile, seems to have settled right around 80 cents after a wild few months. It's currently at 82 but was down at 77 cents as recently as a month ago.

That report

Seems to suggest that the majority of revenue growth again occurred from the ugly six north of the border? The teams that Bettman doesn’t really want to deal with?

The report suggested no such thing. What are you talking about?

How does the NHL actually increase revenue in this recession???? That’s unpossible!

It’s possible their projections are a bit rosy. Playoff tickets may be a tough sell in some markets.

Season ticket sales were made last February so I would think that that probably has an effect.

True

But I prefer to look at the positive here. The maligned NHL isn’t doing so terribly all things considered. I know for the Devils, Vanderbeek expects a profit even with the dip in attendance.

Not just playoff tix Dr.; looking at these stadiums on a nightly basis, at least 1/4 of the fans are dressing as seats. It will be really interesting to see what the NHLPA’s stance will be based on the actual economics coming down the pike for the NHL.

1) Probably the compromise would be to keep the cap at the same level as this season.

That’s the way I’m thinking of it too. Mirtle saying that we’re looking at a cap between $1m below and $1.5m above means to me it’s going to be the same, and I think GM’s take it the same way. Just make the cap the same as this season and I don’t think you’ll have complaints from anyone.

Interesting…as Daly points out in the article, though, if the economic crisis keeps going, it’s 09-10 that could really be affected here. I know that the Rangers wanted commitments for season tickets in July, before any of this really hit.

So the cap will go down just as top defensive defenseman Marc Staal hits RFA status. Sweet!

Rangers, Royals, Raiders, Knicks...the man loves a winner.
