Where NHLers come from: Sweden

Sweden_medium

Sweden's been considered a world power in hockey now for ages, but really hit its peak about five years ago in terms of NHL representation. The country has struggled at the junior level the past decade, however, something that we will likely see at the highest level over the next few years.

Sweden's current crop of junior players is on the upswing, though, and it's expected Victor Hedman and a handful of other Swedes will be chosen fairly early in the 2009 entry draft. They'll be tough to beat at the world juniors in the next few years.

The leaders in career NHL games played are Mats Sundin, Nick Lidstrom, Borje Salming, Calle Johansson and Ulf Samuelsson. Sundin is the only Swedish born player to record more than 1,000 points, with Lidstrom, Peter Forsberg, Daniel Alfredsson and Markus Naslund rounding out the top five NHL scorers.

Forty Swedes have played at least a game in the NHL so far this season, and the team's best young talent includes Henrik Lundqvist, Nicklas Backstrom and Niklas Kronwall. Quite a few of the country's best players, however, are very close to retirement age.

I seem to remember last year’s WJHC being their coming-out party, as they played two very tight games against Canada: the round-robin game won with seven seconds left (Canada’s first loss since the ’04 gold-medal game) and then the gold-medal game, which they tied with about 35 seconds to go, forcing OT.

What?

No breakdown between the North and South? Interior towns vs. coastal towns? I’m disappointed, James!

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

I sense a suggestion for labeling of the axes. :)

The Guy at Royals Review

is giving you props for these breakdowns. if you didn’t know, Royals Review is considered to be perhaps the best baseball blog on SB Nation. His profile of cities within the Royals radio network is hilarious and should be required reading for anybody on Sports Blog Nation.

Why the hell is it that every Swedish player seems to be such a good two-way player, to a larger extent than to even every hockey playing nation in Europe? Just look at Zetterberg.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

naslund hasn’t passed tomas sandstrom on the all-time swedish scoring list yet. soon, probably, but not yet.

Right. I was just going based off of birthplace and Sandstrom was born in Finland.
