Lightning sign Tokarski
The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed goaltender Dustin Tokarski to a standard three-year entry level contract, Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian Lawton announced.
"Dustin is a young goaltender who has had success at every level he has played by helping his teams win championships," Lawton said. "He has been an underdog most of the time but has never let that distract him from succeeding. We are excited to continue to add people of character to our organization."

I'm sure the Lightning brass took one look at other recent Canadian world junior goaltenders in the NHL, namely Carey Price and Steve Mason, and knew they wanted Tokarski's name on a contract soon.
Tokarski's one of a number of great young netminders coming out of Western Canada, and while he has only played one game so far at the world juniors, could get the call for a pivotal game tomorrow night against the U.S. He has an incredible .955 save percentage with Spokane of the WHL so far this season and led the Chiefs to the Memorial Cup last year. Tokarski was the MVP of that tournament.
He's going to be a good one for Tampa Bay, which could have a pretty solid tandem down the line with Mike Smith proving a decent No. 1 netminder so far this season.

Thought of you as soon as I saw this article come across my feed reader. :)
Canada is still going down tomorrow night, though.
Honk if you love Justice!

The Lightning high on homegrown talent
Haven’t seen this since Vinny Lecavalier

And even they were down on him for a quite some time. If not for some last-minute hand-wringing, Lecavalier would have fulfilled his promise elsewhere.

Where ya been?
For some reason I thought that you covered the World Junior Hockey Championship in more depth previously. Not a peep so far (I know you’ve been on vacation). Been going to quite a few games here in Ottawa, including the stinkers, but it’s a major tournament and the only time it will be in my town.
According to today’s Citizen Tokarski isn’t sure what the rush is. They’ve only been talking for about a week or so. Guess they thought they would grab him while he’s not busy. Neither goalie has been busy. Tokarski saw something like 22 SOGs in the opening game against the Czech Republic. Pickard saw a total of 24 in the following two games.
Today are the two big games of the tournament: Russia vs Sweden and then Canada vs USA. The good thing about having the tournament in one city is that the die hards can see the good games from both pools in two separate arenas.
Good to see you back. Hope you keep an eye on this tournament.

I’m trying but my schedule has conspired against catching a lot of the games. Half my vacation was spent waiting for missed flights in airports in Vancouver, Calgary and Kamloops. Normally I don’t miss any of the games.
I’ll be writing on it once we get into the playoff games.

Well, you didn’t miss anything from the Sweden – Russia game today. Sure the Russians played yesterday but by all reports it was a clinic by Filatov – certainly not anything that should have gassed them to the state we witnessed today. Their goalie put them in a big hole and they put on a valiant effort in the second but they really had nothing to counter the efficiency of the Swedes.
The Canada – US game was easily the best from a fan perspective of the preliminary round. 6 goals in the first period including a 3 goal lead by the USA that was erased by the Canadians before the period ended.
A nail-biter to the end (well, until the two ENs).
Happy New Year James!!
