Chelios to play first-ever AHL games
The Detroit Red Wings today assigned veteran defenseman Chris Chelios to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on a conditioning loan. Chelios has been sidelined since suffering a broken right tibia in an exhibition game at Montreal on September 30.
Chelios, 46, is a 25-year NHL veteran and is currently in his 10th season with the Red Wings. His 1,616 games played ranks first all-time among American born players and sixth all-time in NHL history. He signed a one-year deal to return to the Red Wings in September.

The only games Chelios has ever previously played in the minors came during the lockout when he played with a few other NHLers in the UHL.

It’s not all that shocking, Detroit really doesn’t have much room for him to work on that leg during games.. Also, Holland resigned Chelios with the understanding he was there for his experience chiefly. Given their defensive struggles and his injury, maybe they thought his expertise would best be used on their younger players.
I’m still impressed he’s even playing.
