Stars contemplated waiving Avery before remarks

The Stars have a partial affiliation with the Manitoba Moose and currently have five Dallas players on their AHL roster; however the Moose have made it clear they are not interested in providing a place for Avery to play.

Moose owner Mark Chipman tells TSN, ''We wouldn't take him under any circumstance.''

Chipman says the Stars approached Moose general manager Craig Heisinger recently, several days before Avery's latest offensive remarks on Tuesday to ask if Manitoba would make room for Avery if he cleared NHL waivers.

Following a brief internal discussion, the Moose declined and Dallas decided not to waive him.

— Darren Dreger, TSN.ca

This was posted on TSN's site last night, but must have been somehow lost in the shuffle, because at no point have I see anyone suggest the Stars were attempting to dump Avery prior to this incident.

There's a lot more going on in Dallas than simply what these latest remarks brought on, and I'd imagine the NHLPA would use information such as this if there's any attempt made to void Avery's contract after his suspension.

If you don't have an AHL affiliate who will take him and you can't demote a veteran to the ECHL, where on earth do you banish Avery to? Will anyone in the NHL take a flyer on him?

The Texas Rangers? It’d make some headlines, at least.

They could officially assign him to the AHL for salary cap and roster size purposes and just have him go sit at home rather than go to Manitoba for the rest of the season and then buy him out.

Works out for Avery. He’d wind up with what, 10 million for twenty games? And plus he could embark on his fashion career.

Avery has a limited no-movement clause, of which we don’t know the exact terms. If the Stars were investigating this move with the Moose, I suspect demotion is not a part of the limitations.

Speaks to the silliness of the contract

Again, why, why, why would they give such term and salary to a loose cannon like this? Now they’re stuck.

Wonder if Brett Hull retracts all his previous declarations that reports of Avery-induced unrest in the locker room were baloney.

There were definitely other teams looking at giving Avery a similar contract.

The collective insanity of free agency. It just gave me pause to see how the Rangers wanted little to do with him — much like his previous teams — despite their hyped record with him in the lineup. I mean, that’s just not a guy I’d give four years to, period. And Les Jackson’s demeanor at the time of the signing certainly told me that was on his mind.

But a healthy bunch of the long-term contracts GMs give out sound insane to me, so I have that risk-averse bent.

Well, if it was a “brief internal discussion,” I can see why this would be the first we’ve heard of it.
