McLellan to coach Western all-stars

With the Sharks picking up their 65th standings point of the season tonight with a 4-1 victory in Edmonton, Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan will serve as the Head Coach for the Western Conference for the NHL All-Star Game, which will be held and the Bell Center in Montreal on Jan. 24. The game will take place at 3:00 pm. PST and be broadcast in the United States on Versus.

McLellan will be making his All-Star Game debut and becomes only the second first-year NHL coach in League history to coach an All-Star team. The first was Florida’s Doug MacLean, who coached the Eastern Conference in the 1996 game in Boston.

>> team release

Claude Julien will be the coach of the Eastern Conference team, while the assistant coaches will be Mike Babcock of the Red Wings, and Bruce Boudreau of the Capitals or Guy Carbonneau of the Canadiens (depending on who wins tonight's game).

So after the result of tonight’s Habs/Caps game the Caps get screwed out of the All-Star game by the Habs yet again.

Why is there only one assistant coach? You’d think 3 would go for each conference just because 3 coaches is kind of the standard.

I guess because they’re actually not all that necessary?

I realize, but the same could be said about having a full player roster. Heck, they bring 3 goalies per team.

Babcock did joke that whoever was head coach, McLellan would be doing all the work anyway because he would be busy catching up with a lot of friends in the area. Not that any of the coaching duties should be especially onerous.
