Devils sign Shanahan

Shannj_medium

The Devils have brought left wing Brendan Shanahan back to the organization.

The 39-year-old left wing agreed to terms today on what is believed will be a one-year contract. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said that Shanahan "has not officially signed a contract" yet.

"His representative and I will be working on that in the next couple of days," Lamoriello said. "That's why I said he's agreed in principle and that's not something either one of us are worried about."

Shanahan can still contribute in some ways, and as long as they don't expect too much of him at this point, it's possible he becomes a stabilizing influence in the locker room. He put up 23 and 29 goals in his last two seasons with the Rangers, playing about 19 minutes a game.

UPDATE Reporter Tom Gulitti has some quotes from the man himself:

"I can just say I feel really good," Shanahan said. "I feel really strong, but at the same time I feel very rested. I maintained my training regimen through the summer. I had always sort of hoped and felt that in any week it could happen with any team and I wanted to be ready. So, I've been skating and training pretty much through the summer and all through training camp and right on until the present day. In my own head, I thought that probably a lot of teams were doing mid-season reports and analyzing their own needs, so I was skating a little bit with a college team last week.

"It's going to be a lot more hard work and I look forward to doing that, to getting myself in game shape. It's one thing to stay fit and to train hard and it's another thing to be in game shape. But I think I have a very strong base and foundation to get myself there quickly."

I really like Shanahan. I was sorry to see him leave Detroit, but it was probably the best move for all involved.

Good luck to him, even though I don’t really like the Devils. I dislike them less than the Rangers, so that’s fine.

What I like of this signing is that it’s brought back pictures of the Devils’ red and green jerseys. My first minor hockey team had uniforms that were based off that design. The red ones were much better than the white ones, and should’ve been retained.

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Yeah, I remember back then Sean Burke was my guy, right out of the national team and on the Devils. He and Daren Puppa were up on my wall in about ’89.

Seconded. Obviously a minor concern, but I always thought the league “feels” better with more color variation – and the Devils were a way of pulling off green without looking ridiculous (if anything, it was their history that looked ridiculous when they switched). Beats having the current 25 versions of “none more blacker.”
