Team Jagr wins KHL all-star game

Jzjcutfihqhgebb

The setting was certainly amazing. Check out the photos here.

Fueled by Marcel Hossa’s (Dynamo Riga) goal with just under a minute to play, Team Jagr upended Team Yashin 7-6, to win the inaugural Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) All-Star Game today on Red Square in Moscow.

Hossa’s game winning goal was his third of the day and proved to be the exciting difference maker for the international squad of KHL All-Stars, captained by Jaromir Jagr (Avangard Omsk). Team Yashin, featuring Russian-born players and led by Alexei Yashin (Lokomotiv Yaroslavl), was paced offensively by Oleg Saprykin (CSKA Moscow) and Sergei Mozyakin (Atlant Mytishchi), who each scored two goals against Team Jagr’s strong goaltending tandem of Robert Esche (SKA St Petersburg) and Ray Emery (Atlant Mytishchi).

The game was contested in front of a lively crowd who braved cold temperatures in the single digits Fahrenheit to enjoy this historic event.

>> KHL release

Apparently it was about -15 Celsius, or five degrees Fahrenheit, so a tad more nippy than the NHL's Winter Classic on Jan. 1. Apparently only about 3,000 fans were at the KHL game.

I'm a bit late getting this up given the game ended before noon EST, but I haven't seen hardly any coverage and the event's worth talking about. There are a few videos available at Universal Sports' website, as the network that broadcast the game in the U.S. did a nice job webcasting a pretty unique game.

Here's Jagr's thoughts on the game: "It was a celebration of great hockey. I dreamed to play in Red Square, and now my dream came true. It’s Red Square, what can be said more? It was pretty cold, but we managed ok.

"There was a threat of stretching limbs and getting hurt. That’s why we played with care, although you witnessed, it was a real game. We wanted to win, and we did it. We were focused on victory not on putting up a show. You see, I summoned Marcel Hossa (note: Hossa selected by Jagr as assistant captain), and he did the hat-trick. One should know on whom to count."

And here's good old Ray Emery answering a few questions:

"It was a good game. But … very cold.

Could you compare the style of play in NHL and KHL?

"It’s different. The ice rink in Russia is wider, so the play is less physical; it’s more about skill and speed."

Could you imagine, some day the all-star team from NHL playing against KHL stars in the ice arena on Red Square?

"I hope I would be invited!"

A few more quotes after the break:

Star-divide

Marcel Hossa, Dynamo Riga:

·        I expected it would be an outstanding event, but not to that extent. Also I had to fight against a very oppressive frost.

·        We all realized it was a friendly encounter, although it does not make our victory less significant and less rewarding.

Branko Radivojevic, Spartak Moscow:

·        Wonderful atmosphere, exciting game. The frost would not stop us. We did not swear to each other to win the game at all cost, but we hoped for a victory, which is not surprising.

·        I would like to give my special thanks to the fans. They too had to survive the cold, but their support was exceptionally warm.

Alexei Morozov, Ak Bars Kazan:

·        Playing in Red Square amounts to a very special experience, it will be the memory for the whole life.

·        I have a very good feeling after having played at an open air arena. Sometimes, we were training outside. Last time, before this Game, I was playing in the open air a year and a half ago.

·        Our team was even more joyful than our competitors. We enjoyed absolutely everything.

Apparently only about 3,000 fans were at the KHL game.

According to an acquaintance who was there, that’s pretty much all the stands could take. Remember, it wasn’t an actual stadium. Also, in the photos you linked the parts of the stands that you can see appear crammed.

I’ve seen one KHL game in person myself. High standard of hockey, but the setting was a bit… uhh… Soviet. And not in a good way, unlike this all-star game. Nah, who am I kidding, sure it was in a good way because it was hilarious, not something you would have expected in 2008.

If North American rinks were larger, don’t you think we would have less fighting for that alone?

Great photos of hockey in Red Square. Should’ve booked Scorpions for the intermission entertainment :)
