Kovalchuk named Thrashers captain

As per Ben Wright at the Blueland Blog.
And, for now anyway, it sounds as though Ilya Kovalchuk is happy in Atlanta. It's been another brutal season so far, but he does have another year on his contract so who knows? Maybe a regime change finally comes in terms of a new GM and he can somehow persuade his lone star to stay put?
This has to be the latest captaincy announcement in recent history.

Defies conventional wisdom...
While all mainstream hockey cognescenti have been imploring Atlanta to move Kovalchuk, they make him Captain?
I agree, he’s gone in a year if there isn’t a sea change in the organization. At this point, they’re in severe danger of being out-drawn by their AHL affiliate.

Thrashers Just Got Another Contract Out of Kovlachuk
I’m pretty certain this moves gets Kovalchuk to sign an extension this summer. That’s good in the sense that it prevents another Hossa-eque fire sale, but does it speed them along the way to becoming a contending club?

What the hell is going on in that picture? Are these guys moonlighting as waiters or something?

They had a Casino Night in Atlanta yesterday. Apparently an annual team function.

Sure teams need uniforms…but matching tuxes? That’s taking the team concept too far. Goofy!

Seems like a more appropriate tradition in Phoenix.

Casino Night is an annual tradition to raise money for various charities and legal fees for the ownership group. Several other themes were tried in the past. “Roaring 20’s Night” featured the players dressed as gangsters and bootleggers selling bathtub gin. My personal favorite was “Funky 70’s Night” where the team donned Superfly pimp suits and the Thrasher Girls were their “ho’s”. Neither of these were deemed family friendly and were dropped for the fake gambling facade.
