Pro Quality. Fan Perspective.
Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Please do not abuse the FanPosts

I appreciate all of the solid contributions some readers have made in the right hand sidebars the past few months, but I unfortunately have had a lot of garbage posted there as well.

Lately, someone calling themselves the Masked Avenger has been repurposing their offensive blog content onto this site, material that slags other bloggers, media personalities and NHL officials. It's all been deleted, but you can read it over on his site if you wish. (I don't mind if people want to share content from their blog in that space, but it needs to reach a certainly level of dignity to stay there.)

The thing with SBN's software is that it's often easy to tell where this nonsense is coming from — and it's even easier to get rid of. The Masked Avenger's profile on this site gives away his identity:

Gallof_medium

For the uninitiated, B.D. Gallof is the Islanders blogger at HockeyBuzz.com (and elsewhere). He owes an apology to TSN's Bob McKenzie along with a host of other people.

Don't do this. Don't fill the FanPosts, FanShots or comments with expletives, insults and other garbage because it's honestly not all that hard to figure out where it's coming from and put an end to it.

Thanks.

Well Done

Nice work James. It’s remarkably easy to deal with clowns like him.

This guy was a doofus

he’s trying to tell me, an American, that Canadian Hockey coverage sucks. Now I know bad sports coverage seeing as I live below the forty ninth parallel and I would kill to have a guy as competent as Ron Maclean doing studio work, or coverage were there’s a timer and analysts are asked to give single word answers to stupid questions. Now thats bad sports coverage.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Since this is your site, how do I know you didn’t make all that up?

Sorry, the enter button is quite sensitive…

“I will rant on all things hockey.” Classless comments is not ranting. Milburry and McGuire may be annoying, but it’s not like they don’t have knowledge to share with the lesser educated hockey fans. And Don Cherry is past his prime, but it’s his aura and celebrity that keeps him on television. Deal with it.

I kinda like McGuire duck. Whatever though.

I guess you could expect this from a HockeyBuzz blogger. I mean, he does like the Islanders.

Don't be afraid to take a few steps back, but you better keep moving forward.

Don’t think every Islander fan is an idiot or classless. The website I just read was indeed that. The Islanders get enough crap, please leave the rest of the fans out of it.

no problem

The first Islander fan I read was Dominick on Lighthouse, right here.

As a result, I have a pretty good opinion of Islander fans. :)

Heh, thanks. We K.C. Isles fans are people too :)

Since I was mentioned in these comments: I watched tonight’s Isles game totally oblivious to this. Stumbled upon it via PPP and, huh, a bizarre stunt indeed — the purpose of which I do not get. I’d seen the “Avenger” stuff and smelled something hoax-ish: beyond the random obscenities, the cadence was all over the place (“Doesn’t this random selection seem desperately random, Clarice?”). So I figured it’d be stopped quickly (Gotta love SBN’s tools.). Never would have guessed that identity though — not because he’s a fellow Isles fan, but because B.D.‘s done a lot of good stuff. Still don’t get it.

But I see James says he’s talked to him and it’s done. [cues after-school special music] So the lesson in this is that SBN’s tools — in addition to making these communities fun and easily navigated — also make it easy to weed out trolls quickly, which is honestly a big reason I got involved: Talking hockey is fun; worrying about garbage is not. I see the West coast games are still going … Game on!

Terrible...

Reading that, it comes across like he’s trying to copy the ‘in-your-face’ of a certain offensive hockey blog by being harsh. Too bad he’s so full of hate, whereas the other harsh / rude blog’s have a love of hockey. Kind of sad more than anything else. I didn’t read one good thing about hockey. Just a person who was upset. So yeah, not kind of sad. Just sad.

1) These days when IP adresses/other identifyers are so easily tracked its inane to think that one can maintain multiple identities.
2) Haven’t read the content that was found offensive, but having had our own issue with having our blog hacked, and our identity stolen we are sensitive/empathetic to this issue.

BD?

Can I just say… Oh my God! I had no idea this was happening. But now I’m starting to wonder about alot of things.

I’ve sat many a night four seats away from BD in the Blog Box at the Coliseum. I’ve been to meetings with him. I would never imagine he would pull a stunt like this. I am sad and dissapointed to say the least.

And whatever software you have here is wonderful. I think I could use it myself.

And no… Not all Islanders fans or Islanders Bloggers are idiots, jerks or pompas asses. There are quite a few of us that work hard because we love writing, we love hockey and we have no ulterior motives. Of this I swear!

James,

Like 7th Woman already said, I was oblivious to this whole thing and had I known about it I would have emailed you.

I don’t really know much about what happened (I saw the google cache of the blog) but I am really surprised and agitated that the Isles bloggers have been given a black eye by the masked avenger.

I know I have not spent too much time around the new site, but keep up the great work. SBN really has their stuff together – if Dominik wasn’t already here I had considered moving over myself!

Like Mike and the 7th Woman have said, we were all pretty much in the dark of everything and never saw this coming.

As a member of the NYI Blog Box, I certainly do not condone nor aprrove anything BD has written.

Islanders bloggers and the rest of the NYI Blog Box prides themselves on working hard and providing good quality content.

This little stunt that BD has pulled is not a reflection of that, and I certainly hope it doesn’t affect everyone else’s perception of us.

I’m shocked and appalled at the events that have transpired and I’m left with a feeling of emptiness and betrayal.

It has been a hard road to establish any credibility for the members of the Blog Box and it was nice to be finally make strides.

Please, as my colleagues have stated, don’t group us together with those who would tarnish our image and bring a dark cloud over our work. I’m hopeful that this will not be a reflection of all of us within the Blog Box.

James great work with the site.

Hey, it's your blog

I realize you’re aiming high here, so dumping The Masked Avenger is within reason, but that link emcerlain posted made me chuckle. The evaluation of the Bruins post-Joe was perfectly valid. As was the brief rip on Sundin. I’m certain every person named in those posts has thick enough skin to handle those jabs.

Is everybody bent because he was rude or because he employed a pseudonym? I feel like there’s a part of the story that I’m not getting. Because if pseydonyms are verboten, why don’t you just make us all use our real names in order to post or comment? If his rudeness is the problem, I think people are taking things way too seriously.

by Dr Van Nostrum on Jan 16, 2009 11:48 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Can't speak for everyone

But it seems there are two things at play:

First you’ve got an ‘official team blogger’, under cover of darkness, taking potshots at teams, players, personalities. Many people call Don Cherry an idiot. Few call him a fat idiot. I’ve never seen a ‘professional’ show a picture of some fat slob while talking about Cherry, the reference being the fat slob is Don Cherry. Now, Don Cherry begs for criticism at times. But Bob MacKenzie? Seriously? It’s beyond rude. It’s disrespectful. So here is someone who is ‘proudly’ representing the islanders getting pot shots off to people around the league. It lacks courage using a psuedonym when you already have a blog.

Second, it’s not that it’s rude, offensive, without tact. It’s that it’s just pure piss and vitriol. There’s some anger out there on the internet, sure, and maybe his article about the Bruins has some truth to it, but to write it in such a way that it’s just one big back handed compliment to Bruins fans, leaving it as ‘read it and weep fuckfaces’…? This guys stuff just comes across as bitter packaged in smarts. There are rude, silly, funny blogs out there. This is not one of them. This one reminds me a family friend I bring out with my friends. He’s very smart, but has zero social skills. My friends don’t like him because he’s not nice to anybody.

I realize you’re aiming high here, so dumping The Masked Avenger is within reason, but…

Perhaps it’s just a matter of expectation: There is bawdy humor and language at other sites, where the tone is established by context, but that is obviously not the tone here. People can share their ideas, even repost their own blog content (under whatever pseudonym they register with) — but not abuse this forum (and its high traffic) with stuff that crosses that line. James is simply stating that: “Don’t do this.” Example made. Message sent. Apology received.

Beyond that, starting a blog on Jan. 10 under a pseudonym, immediately reposting its “blue” content here several days in a row and continuing to do so after being warned — that raises questions of intent, particularly when your real name/byline is already known in existing blogging circles. Add to it using that same pseudonym to praise yourself at Chris Botta’s popular Islanders site (comments since deleted, of course), and one wonders, wait, what’s going on? What’s the intent? This is the alter ego where I get to do what I wouldn’t do under my own name? The expectation: no, not here. They’ve got dating sites for that.

Finally, you have his Islanders Blog Box colleagues who shared their concerns above about how such stunts could affect their rep/access. With the mixed reception and definition bloggers have received, I don’t think that’s a surprising concern.

I can’t speak for everyone, but that is why I suspect people are bent. If it doesn’t matter at all — it’s just the Internet, after all — then the owner of this site calling him out on it shouldn’t be a big deal either, because hey, it’s just the Internet. He’s a big boy, he can take the rebuke, and carry on. No autopsy, no foul.

Exactly

It’s one thing to use a pseudonym instead of your real identity, it’s another to create a new pseudonym to protect the integrity of your original pseudonym. The guy’s already a hockey blogger. If he hadn’t known this content was out of line, he wouldn’t have ‘masked’ his identity.

I've been looking at the sky
