Dubie's whirlwind return to the NHL
Shortly after Wade Dubielewicz came off the ice at the Islanders' pre-game skate this morning at the Coliseum, he received a telephone call from general manager Garth Snow informing him that he had been claimed on waivers by Columbus.
"I thought he was joking at first, but he wasn't," Dubielewicz said. "He was disappointed, and I'm disappointed."
It wasn't hard to see this coming.
We'd heard that Dubielewicz was getting interest from as many as three or four teams, and because he was coming to the NHL from the KHL in midseason, he would have to clear waivers in order to join any team. It stands to reason that, as soon as he signed on with one club, whoever missed out on him would put in a claim.
There's a real midseason goalie shuffle going on in the league now, with the Garon-Sabourin trade earlier today, Curtis Sanford clearing waivers a few days ago and now this business for Dubie. The Isles are going to have to add some sort of netminder in the near future, even if they are tanking for Tavares, so expect some news on that soon.
Yann Danis will start tonight, and he's been decent lately. Chris Botta has more on the Islanders' side of things, while Puck-rakers is following this for The Columbus Dispatch.

Comeback?
Garth Snow great comeback on the way?
Yann Danis was barely able to keep the role of being a starter in the AHL, nevermind the NHL. Ithink the Islanders should just hold on to what they already have and take a shot at Tavares or Hedman.

Dunham
The other night when Joey MacDonald went down and Danis stepped in, goalie coach Mike Dunham (retired two years now) left the sky box to go stretch as the emergency backup goaltender. Seriously. They even got permission from the league in between periods.
So… after Dunham, then comes Snow, then Scott Gordon? I’d have to check my “Pocket Constitution” for the official order of succession.

smart
Fill the front office with emergency goalies so you are prepared for any eventuality. :)

Worked for the Rangers in ‘27, when Lester Patrick came off the bench to play. Didn’t they win the Cup that year?

Merry-Go-Round
The truly hilarious part of this waiver move is the goalie carousel that Dubielewicz and Norrena have been going at this season. Dubie signs with Kazan, Fred leaves Columbus, Dubie gets bought out in Kazan, Fred signs with Kazan, Dubie ends up in Columbus. Whee!

I’m trying to figure out whether I’d less like to live in Kazan or Columbus.

Heh, I had no problem with C’bus when I went to visit last spring for a few days. The Arena District was actually sorta hopping.
