Lightning claim defenceman Murphy
The Tampa Bay Lightning have claimed defenseman Cory Murphy off re-entry waivers from the Florida Panthers, Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton announced.
Murphy, 30, has skated in 54 NHL games the past two seasons with Florida, recording two goals, 16 assists and 24 penalty minutes. He has also skated in five games with Rochester of the American Hockey League this season, tallying two goals and six points.
>> team release
Murphy had a pretty solid first NHL season last year after coming over from Europe, but he's really battled injury this season and spent time in the AHL. He can certainly pitch in on the Lightning's top six.

What a ridiculous figure…And just think, we’re only a little past halfway through the season.

And only 3 or 4 of them (Meszaros, Carle, Ranger? Krajicek? Malik?) are even worth their jocks.

I know the Washington Capitals used 17 D-men in the 2003/2004 season, so no record yet.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

Ah phooey...
You’re right, Mr. Narc. We’ll have to wait until the trade deadline to see what other wacky deals this ownership group pulls off.
The one common thread between that Washington blueline crowd and this Tampa Bay one? Steve Eminger. He’s actually playing pretty well for the Bolts, if you would believe it. It also happens to be a contract year for him…

#17
The 17th d-man they used that year was Mel Angelstad, a career minor leaguer who finally got his first NHL action in his mid-30s. He wore #69, the only NHL player to ever proudly sport that number.
Your move, Tampa!

Fittingly, Murphy scored last night after I made that comment.
