Datsyuk, Lidstrom out of all-star game
Having produced a marvelous first half of the 2008-09 season that has him fifth in the League with 24 goals, San Jose center Patrick Marleau now has a spot in the 2009 NHL All-Star Game to show for it. Having been named to the 2008 All-Rookie Team, Montreal goaltender Carey Price has chosen to do double-duty by coming to the aid of his class and will play goal for the sophomores in the 2009 NHL YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck in addition to starting for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star Game.
Marleau and Dallas Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas have been named to the Western Conference team to replace injured Detroit Red Wings Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom, respectively, in the 57th NHL All-Star Game in Montreal’s Bell Centre on Sunday.
>> league release
There are a ton of changes to the lineup here if you include the YoungStars game, with Price stepping in for the injured Erik Ersberg, Nashville's Pekka Rinne playing in place of Steve Mason on the rookie team, and Dave Bolland and David Perron of the Blackhawks and Blues playing on the sophomore team in place of Milan Lucic and Nicklas Backstrom.
UPDATE This means there'll be no Red Wings at the game. No word on what Datsyuk and Lidstrom are suffering from but they did play last night.
UPDATE Datsyuk left last night's game with a hip pointer in the third period.
UPDATE Backstrom, meanwhile, says he's not hurt at all and just doesn't want to go. Which is fair enough given he should be in the all-star game rather than the goofy/stupid YoungStars for a second year in a row:
"I am grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in the YoungStars Game last year ... This year I felt like it made more sense for me to give someone else that opportunity and use this time to rest and prepare for the second half of the season with the Washington Capitals. I can assure Caps fans that I'm not injured and will be ready to go Tuesday in Boston."
UPDATE I talked to beat writer Bruce MacLeod on email and he said Lidstrom's been battling an issue with his elbow this season and that's why he's sitting out. Fair enough.
It's unfortunate so many of the stars choose to sit every year, but what can you do?
The press release also had this note about where the game's being broadcast:
North American broadcast will be "on CBC and RDS in Canada and VERSUS in the United States. NASN, ASN, J Sports, Sky Mexico, Fox Sports Australia and other NHL international broadcast partners will provide live coverage of both the Honda/NHL SuperSkills event and the NHL All-Star Game to more than 150 countries and territories in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific Rim, Mexico and the Caribbean."
The one game the league shows Mexico and Australia is the all-star game? Go figure.

Classy move by Price.
I find it funny that the only Finns taking part in the festivities are Niklas Backstrom and his Finnish Elite League backup Pekka Rinne. Quite a tandem they had, some Nashville scout quipped that they scouted Rinne’s warmups because Backstrom played all the games.

Halak
Jaro could’ve played in the YoungStars game as well, but maybe he has his vacation plans scheduled. Price is playing in the YoungStars game and the 1st period of the All-Star Game, but will not participate in the skills competition since he is just coming off his injury (played his first game last night in relief of Halak, will start tonight).

But you didn’t mention anything about the “conspiracy” of Lidstrom and Dastyuk.

Here, on Monday, you mentioned that Robidas and Marleau are in place of two stars that were still unmentioned.

But here on Wednesday, it says they’re in place of Lidstrom and Datsyuk – who were both healthy enough to play on Tuesday’s game.
Something fishy is going on. Detroit not like the All Star game?

Maybe they’re banged up. Players opt out of this game all the time.

I know game recaps from that game mentioned Datsyuk left with an injury.

This is silly and the league really needs to take a hard look at the All Star Game. Aside from the whole voting nonsense, it seems like most of the actual stars really don’t want to play in it. There is almost no luster left in this corporate event and the payoff for the participants really isn’t worth it when they are making six, seven, eight mllion dollars a year already. All it has become is a boring exhibition game on a niche network that most hockey fans will tune in to for the sole reason that it is the only game that is being televised. Non hockey fans certainly won’t bother. So what’s the point?

I’m getting married on Friday. There’s no coincedence that the wedding and honeymoon was planned around All-Star weekend.
And before you ask, yes, she’s a hockey fan too.

Congrats btw! Will some Sabs be on top of the wedding cake?

it seems like most of the actual stars really don’t want to play in it.
I think most of the other sports have the same problem…baseball regularly has players who are selected, and then opt out, without even making the pretense of being injured…I think the main purpose of these events are to give the corporate partners a venue to party to excess and also another game to soak the season ticket holders of whatever city the game is being played…personally, I stopped caring about all star games a long time ago.

The simple solution for the silly starting rosters...
…is to have the two coaches set their rosters, then have the fans vote from that day to the night of the Skills Competition for the starters. Close the polls at the start of the Skills, then announce the votes at the end. Fairer roster, fan input, and a reason to tune in to the slam dunk contest breakaway-move contest.

Woa hold on! You can’t have it like that! It’s waaaaay too logical…

Upper body hubris.
It’s kind of a shame that the Red Wings didn’t make a statement a few months ago telling their fans not to bother with the voting process. I’m sure somebody today realized how much time they’ve been wasting trying to honor the cup champs.

Here’s one fan that didn’t need a statement to not bother voting. Nobody cares about the all star game.

I guess, but I don’t think all of Lidstrom’s thousands of votes were cast in the spirit of indifference.

Fox Sports Australia shows two live NHL games per week, in HD. The next game according to their schedule is Boston vs Washington, January 27 in North America but showing at 11 am Sydney time on Jan 28.

As a Wings fan...
I’m psyched Lidstrom and Datsyuk are getting extra time off.
At the same time, it seems a little ridiculous that Hossa, Zetterberg, and Rafalski don’t have a spot on the team over some of the dudes who are going. I’m looking at you Modano, Robidas, and Nash.

I don’t know who to blame on this, but my first guess would be Hossa, Zetterberg, and Rafalski. I suspect the league’s desire to have 30 teams represented has been fairly consistent.

Kudos to Backstrom
Until some stakes are introduced to the all-star game (ie. home ice advantage for the winning conference in the Cup finals), why bother risking an injury to participate in this circus. As a fan, I’d rather see my players enjoy a week of rest and get focused for games that actually mean something.
