Florida tunes in the Winter Classic

NHL Winter Classic 2009, broadcast New Year's Day on NBC from historic Wrigley Field, earned a 2.9 overnight rating and a 6 share (1-4:15 p.m. ET), the best overnight NHL regular season rating in nearly 13 years (Feb. 3, 1996 on Fox, six-game regional, 3.0/7) and a 12 percent increase over last year's inaugural event (2.6/5, 1-4:45 p.m. ET). The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 6-4 in the second U.S. outdoor game in NHL history.

"Year one was an extraordinary experience. Year two was the establishment of what promises to be a great tradition," said NBC Sports President Ken Schanzer.

Given the markets involved, it's no surprise ratings are up, but it's interesting seeing some of the markets that are showing up here in the top 10.

My theory

Many Floridians just tuned in to laugh at those crazy Northerers freezing appendages off outside in this weather! :)

Makes me wonder

… where is New York area in this list? That’s a big market, with two NHL franchises in NYC alone and it was always one of the most important markets for hockey in the US.

And then there's the expats

There are a lot of Québecers who winter on the east coast of Florida, to the extent that, even 20+ years ago, when I lived in Florida, there were signs in French in that area. Consider the extent to which the Habs-Panthers game last week sounded like a Habs home game!

Minneapolis?

Surprised they didn’t make the top 10. They always seem to.

Let's go Buffalo

Right there with the two markets that were actually playing.

Metered Markets

Boston, NYC and the Twin Cities might not have been “metered.”
