This looks a lot like the Downie hit on McAmmond, if you ask me. Same kind of intent, hit to the head, and they both left their feet.

If Downie got 25 games, so should Gauthier.

10 games, easily.

Don't be afraid to take a few steps back, but you better keep moving forward.

Wishful thinking. 3-5 games, imo. The big difference between Downie and this is that Gauthier didn’t come across the entire rink to deliver the hit

I see you’re point, but it certainly looks to me like the same kind of intent was there. Isn’t that a major factor in determining these suspensions? (at least it should be)

I think this is at least 10 games, what with the crusade against hits to the head and everything.

It should be at least ten

but the wheel of justice probably has other ideas.

Reply hazy, try again.

If Sean Avery gets six for name calling, Guathier should get 10 or more for intent to injure.

by auxlepli on Feb 1, 2009 1:32 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

That’s at least ten.

by hallock on Feb 1, 2009 2:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Let’s just say that if it ends up being any of the first three categories, that’s just wrong. The hit’s just blatant with the elbow and the jump. Gorges’ apparent wooziness from the impact shouldn’t help Gauthier’s case and he also has a history of a couple of league suspensions and a dirty reputation. I voted 5-9 but even longer certainly wouldn’t seem inappropriate.

I fully agree with this post.

Should be ten, but I’m guessing it will be three or four. Because that’s how the wheel of justice spins.

Wheel of morality, turn turn turn

tell us the lesson that we should learn. I’m laying odds on 5 games. Should be a lot more…

History counts....

So that tells me 5 games minimum. I don’t expect it to be more than 10, but I want it to be. Wishful thinking.

'Signs point to yes'

As Colin Campbell has said, they “take each incident as separate.” So absent comparable standards, rhyme or reason, it really depends on which side of the bed the Magic 8-Ball woke up that day.

I voted 5-9 since it’s a clear head shot and the elbow was up.

But did he really “leave his feet”? I mean before the hit, obviously he flies up on impact. But is it really clear that he jumps to make the hit? I don’t see it.

I do. He definitely left his feet before impact.

Lets be honest. The only suspension from that game should be the referees for blowing the call on Higgins goal.

by Nut on Feb 1, 2009 6:50 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know about that, but it was a bad call.

by James Mirtle on Feb 1, 2009 9:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You’re right. Knocking Gorges so loopy he damned near fell into the boards getting up isn’t worth any suspension at all.

Shoving aside the last defender on a rush? Suspend him! Flying elbow? That’s just a hockey play.

I have no opinion on games suspended, but the Canadiens reaction spoke volumes.

I am not a fan of hockey pugilism, but would rather see teammates come to the rescue than the apathetic Montreal response.

PJ Stock referenced it yesterday when Tim Thomas got run, did you see the convergence around the crease? And those coming to the rescue were far from being their team’s enforcers.

I consider the Habs reaction plenty appropriate: they scored a goal 2 seconds into the power play. Had someone retaliated, we might not have had that power play.

Montreal only lost Kostopolous for three games to the Van Ryn hit, I’m not sure that this is worse than boarding a guy on an icing call.
