Tavares trade leaks out on day of WJC final
It's no surprise John Tavares is getting dealt from the Oshawa Generals, as that's been rumoured for months. Oshawa's rebuilding, and they can get a princely sum for a player who'll potentially be the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft this June.
What is a surprise is that the details of the deal are coming out today, a few hours before the gold medal final at the world junior tournament:
John Tavares will soon be a member of the London Knights, sources tell Sportsnet.ca
There has been speculation that Tavares would be traded before the Jan. 10 trade deadline and sources say the deal is done to send the Oshawa Generals forward to London.
The deal won’t be made official until Tavares returns from the world junior tournament.
I doubt this fazes Tavares (heck, he might have already known) but you will see the 'distraction' story come up now that the cat's out of the bag.
I'll have more thoughts on the big game tonight in the near future.

I love me some CHL
but seriously, as an American, it still makes me raise the eyebrow that a teenager can get traded before he turns “pro”.

You should see the 100-plus game schedule some of these kids play while in high school.

It seems that the situation has really changed in the last 10 or so years with the intensity of kids trying to make it from early and early ages. The percentages are so small of someone making it. It just makes for more competitive rec league games for me in the future I guess ;).

I remember THN had a great story on Patrick Kane’s route to the NHL, via growing up in Buffalo, and the amount of cash his parents spent to get him to the elite level was mind-boggling. More and more, money’s a fairly big factor in who’s making it in a lot of places.
I see it a lot more here in Toronto than back in Kamloops, where almost everyone played a full season for a $300 entry fee.

I'm on Blackcapricorn's wavelength
I’m just a caveman, but confuse me, your CHL does.
That THN story on the Kane investment was amazing. I mean, I had a fair inkling it was happening just from being around Tiger Wood-model parents in every sport. But to see it outlined was unreal.

“…and undisclosed cash considerations”?
I’d love the details on that one.
