"Over the past couple of days Jacques (Lemaire) and I have had conversations. The unexpected has transpired.  It's not that Brendan cannot play. It's that these (young) players have become something special at this time."

"This is a mutual decision, an amicable one. After today we'll make the decisions we have to make."

— Lou Lamoriello, to Rich Chere, The Star-Ledger

"I have not decided to continue with the New Jersey Devils for my 22nd NHL season.  When I signed this past summer, Lou Lamoriello, Jacques Lemaire and I agreed that if we were unable to find a suitable fit in which I would be able to compete and contribute at the level I expect from myself, then I would simply step aside.

"I have great respect for Lou, Jacques and the entire Devils' organization. This decision is both mutual and amicable. I am planning to spend the next couple of weeks with my family to reflect on and evaluate my plans for the future. Most importantly, I would like to thank my former teammates and wish them the best of luck this season."

— Brendan Shanahan's statement

Anyone else see him stepping into the mess that is the NHLPA and setting them straight?

Hahahahahaha!!

Oh, you’re serious? Anyways, that’s what we thought Paul Kelly was going to do. Look how that turned out.

Paul Kelly hasn’t punched a couple of dozen different NHLPA members in the face. They’re scared of Shanny. ;)

I guess none of the other players’ wives appealed to him.

Shanahan on his very very last legs is still better than what a lot of teams have. Actually, I wonder if he wouldn’t have been a good presence on the Sharks. Guys like him, Ricci, Morrow, those are the sorts of guys the Sharks have been needing for the last couple years.
