I was trying to get a quote on Pavel Datsyuk from Ovechkin for an upcoming issue of Sporting News magazine but I don't think I'll be able to use what he said.
I asked what Pavel Datsyuk brought to the table as a player. Ovechkin's answer?
"He's won a Lady Byng trophy a lot," Ovechkin said. "So, probably ladies love him."
That's it?
"Yeah."
Thanks, Alex. Not usable for the magazine, but pretty funny.

Datsyuk, when asked what Ovechkin brought to the table, answered “My breakfast.”
The two of them are old friends, both love to make jokes, and are thoroughly enjoying themselves as the media searched for quotes about each other. I imagine they might just drive the rest of the Russian team crazy in Vancouver.

I’d argue this is pretty light hearted and you’re over-reacting.

Maybe it's just that both Ovie and Datsyuk don't
take themselves too seriously. There is no doubt in my mind that AO respects Datsyuk and knows he and the rest of the Red Wings have a couple of things he and all the Capitals want.
I don’t see how this is stupid or bad karma… I seem to recall last season a different Russian Capital gave a serious answer about a different star from another NHL team that got taken out of context and became great locker room fodder for them. Giving someone from the press no usable quote is better than giving them one that can be used to incite the other team and no hichly competative guy wants to say something too complimentary about an opponent so I don’t know why anyone would have a problem with this quote. Obviously AO is just trying to kid around.. just like Datsyuk’s quote about what AO brings to the table…

They both have great senses of humour.
It just requires more patience sometimes for a reporter to understand it, especially with Pavel’s English. If someone doesn’t have the time to let him find the words and goes to someone who is more glib, they won’t catch his jokes. Spend the time and they will find he is very funny.

Maybe someday Douchevetchkin will take off that Ed Hardy shirt, stop taking runs at his opponents best players, and realize what a giant tool he is.

Probably the same day you get a joke.

What's the big deal?
Is that any worse than the two interviews Scott Gomez has given to Hockey Night In Canada where he basically told the interviewers to ‘f-off’ when it comes to asking about his lack of height? He skewered Bruce Rennie with a really sarcastic comment and did the same thing to Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey on Saturday night?

I woud not put any stock in it!!
Two guys with a ton in common making lots of money from the same country, Daytsuk is a known joker himself and I’m sure he found that statement funny.
I have played golf in Traverse City with Pavel and the man is a complete comedian.

OK, so let me get this straight
Hockey fans bitch and moan about how the stars give nothing but cliches as answers to questions, show no personality and are in general, boring. Now Ovie and Pavel have a little fun with each other via the media and it’s labeled “stupid” or “bad karma.” The haters come out of the woodwork and bemoan a lack of respect. Sometimes this sport gets exactly what it deserves.
