Life with the Leafs
The blog's growing weeds here a bit. Time for a trim.
The first thing I'll do is offer a hearty congratulations to Tim Wharnsby, my former colleague at The Globe who's now joined CBC.ca as their senior hockey writer. Tim covered the Maple Leafs at the paper for the last 10 years, and we had a great bash for him on the weekend as a send off. (Pierre LeBrun sings some mean karaoke.)
You can find his new material here and over at CBC's website.
I've been filling in for Tim this week, which will mean a few long days at the Leafs beautiful new practice rink, the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence. It also means that posting here will likely be sporadic depending on my availability.
In the meantime, there'll be lots of Leafs coverage at globesports.com and updates on my Twitter feed here. (If you want to really do us a favour, wade into the comments over there as they can get a little ugly sometimes.)
The Leafs beat is likely the most challenging in the NHL given the intense interest in the team here, and even for the off-day practices and morning skates, there are dozens of media from the various newspapers, radio stations and TV networks in the city. Even if there's not a story, the Leafs are a story.
Ron Wilson had a good quote today in practice with regards to his players saying that it will be nice to go on the road, and it sums up one of the challenges with covering the league these days.
"I'm sure on this road trip you'll hear everybody going 'It'll be nice to get home,'" Wilson said. "Those are just clichés you kind of hear if your team's not winning, it's nice to get on the road. When you're on the road and you're not winning, it's nice to get home. You've got to remember, a lot of guys just speak in clichés, that's what they're trained to do. So I wouldn't take anything more out of it than is already there."
One game at a time, another reporter quipped.
"Yeah, one game at a time, the sun always shines," Wilson said. "Blah, blah, blah."
Me, I'm taking it one practice at a time, and there'll be two more until Toronto heads out on the road for five games. And, at that point, I should be back here regularly, blogging away.

So are you going to be on the Leafs beat now? If so that’s quite a coup. Go take the Omen down a notch for the rest of us.
Professional cusser causer.

Congratulations
I’ve been reading the blog for… three… years now. You deserve it.
I hope you’re still have the time to use this space for things beyond your bailiwick, although I’ll never tire of Brian Burke falling flat on his face.

Did Derek Zoolander name the practice rink?
Or is this like calling a fat guy Slim?

It would be funny if the Leafs showed up at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence and were turned away, and when they asked why the manager just pointed at the sign.

New rink – $45,000,000
Signage – $200,000
Naming rights – $5,000,000
Taking a subtle pot-shot at the Leafs – Priceless.
For some jokes you need money. For everything else, there’s MasterCard.

Nice.
And to think I raised an eyebrow when someone bitched in the G&M forums today about you writing an article about the Leafs, like you had turned to the dark side or something!

Congratulations James
Well deserved and hopefully it all works out for you in the end and you get Tim’s job on a permanent basis for I truly enjoy reading your articles. Your one of the best read’s out there that’s for sure.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

congrats James
but for the love of God, please don’t call it the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence anymore!
does every square inch of professional sports need to be branded? its a practice rink for chrissakes!

Hopefully...
… this means there will be at least one person in Toronto covering the Leafs who is not completely in the bag for All Things Burke. That would be refreshing.

He has been pretty subdued this week… probably the right way to go given how down his team is.

That and the fact that they’ve had such a long layoff so anything he could say would be fodder for a long time and not be overshadowed by bad on-ice play.
Congrats, James
Does Wilson ever try to take the heat off of his players when they aren’t playing well? I never got that sense. It seems like he tries to distance himself from his team when they aren’t playing well and then blames the media for asking any(admittedly a lot of redundant) questions of them.

No
You pretty much nailed Wilson’s MO, especially when he was here in San Jose. Dude never seems to admit that he fucked up up, which made Todd McLellan’s admission last season that he didn’t manage injuries well to be a breath of fresh air for Sharks ans.
Now, you can follow my uninteresting life on Twitter.
