Come to think of it, didn’t those 6:41 come in the Montreal game?

sadly

i don’t even remember this. What game was it?

Has to have been against the Islanders.

What do you mean they haven’t played each other yet? How the hell did the Isles get a win then?

1) They (The Isles) should have won Saturday! Thats two games we’ve seen them play against teams (Boston the other) that they outplayed their supposedly superior opponent and still lost. If they play that way every game can’t see them losing 1 in 9 all season!

the Isles played Washington on Saturday.

The Isles deserved to lose because the brought out the damn trap. Employing the trap should result in an automatic loss.

That said, the Isles out hustled the Caps for 50 minutes, and Theodore kept it closer than it probably should have been. But the real lesson learned? Do not piss off Mike Green.

Meh, generally I agree: Trappers should be shot on sight. But when you’re struggling mightily, you’ve lost a few third-period leads already, and you just need a change of luck … well everybody in that situation is going to try to smother their way to try to close out a win. So it goes.

sorry about the harsh-ness of the “die trap, DIE!” style of comment. I just hate the trap. Y’all deserved to win that game based on effort. The Caps can be absolutely maddening to watch at times.

No no, I hear you. The weird thing was even seeing the Isles in position against the Caps to do that — but like you implied, the Caps can play down to the competition, as they did once or twice against the Isles last year.

Still, I’d take that maddening problem off your hands. ;)

I know this is super contraversial

But If the NHL went to International sized ice, I think the trap would become fairly obsolete. It would at least be easier to break.

It won’t happen because of construction costs (and the stupid misconception by owners that they would would lose those high priced seats next to the glass), but but I think it would make for a more exciting brand of hockey.

The majority of international hockey is even lower scoring than the NHL. In the SEL, the trap is rampant.

This. Frankly, on international ice, teams have too much time and space: they can get these defensive formations up with less mistakes. Couple that with the tendency for d-men to stay lower than in the NHL to make sure they aren’t beaten to the outside on the wide surface, and less intensity because of more room, and less physical play because it’s easier to end up out of the play after a big hit on the big ice, and you’ve got a pretty dull brand of hockey.

What people forget when they watch the Olympics and start drooling for the big ice is that they feature all-star players in mid-season form playing seriously but without much team practice (and therefore no set defensive systems other than with the lesser countries – and we’ve seen how the Swiss can trap there). You don’t have those circumstances anywhere else, and they lead to entertaining, offensive hockey no matter the ice surface.

Islanders would have beaten Buffalo if Biron had played the whole game.

Thanks, Rolie!

oh i remembered

must have been montreal. that’s the only game of the year that didn’t have the stench of dread on it from the opening faceoff. Every other game they’ve been blown out ugly, or got stymied and unlucky.

1) Thats an amazing and sick stat! 6:41 over an 8 game span.
2) Any other GM/coach combo and you’d figure the head coach was on very thin ice. Guess not so much with Burke/Wilson, but how long will Burke put up with this kind of a result, regardless of whether its ‘the players faults’ or not. The heat from fans/media up your way must be intense!

6:41

Hey, that’s enough to win every game in an 82 game season, as long as they’ve led for only the last 5 seconds of every game! It’s all about timing.

Nice.

And really it can be less than that (zero) if they go to a shootout every game!

by Afino on Oct 26, 2009 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yay

For holding a lead for more than 6:41 now!

One game winning streak! Hey, gotta start somewhere. A journey of a thousand miles etc. etc. etc.
