Los Angeles to host 2010 NHL Draft
It won’t be announced by the league until early December, but Kings officials have been told that Los Angeles will host the NHL Entry Draft next June. It’s still to be determined whether the event will be held at Staples Center or Nokia Center, but the dates will be June 25-26. By all accounts, it will be the same format, with the first round on Friday night and the rest on Saturday. Give credit to Kyle Woodlief of the Red Line Report scouting newsletter for first mentioning this.
Despite the fact the area's had an NHL team for 40-plus years, Los Angeles has never hosted the entry draft. When I ran a poll back in June asking where people would like to see the 2010 edition held, "Anaheim or L.A." finished fifth among locations that have never had the draft, behind Chicago, New York, Washington and Philadelphia.
December would be a pretty late announcement for this sort of thing, but the rumours have been that the league was looking at having it in Phoenix — something that obviously has gotten a big trickier now. Los Angeles is another West Coast market and home to two teams, so it's a decent enough choice.

So I take it that I will have to carry the banner of Penguin Pride into Staples alone?

-Someone from Pittsburgh criticizing Los Angeles is like an Ethiopian kid making fun of England because people got Mad Cow.
-Does this mean I have to go? Sounds like it’d be fun in theory but then you get there and it’s just a bunch of awkward teenagers and leering adults. Kind of like college, I guess.
-And like that, a plague of pastiness descended upon Los Angeles. Verily, the streets will soon run pink with sunburns.

Yeah it sure was. I was being mildly sarcastic in my LA assessment, but so be it. Meeting up with the SBN peeps is a good enough reason to go, regardless of what city it’s in.

You can have the tallest mountain, we’ve got the best ski areas, closer to the city.

Is crawling in traffic also an option? I have heard rumours that the cars eventually move. :)

worked in Baltimore, Maryland
So I am familiar with that – also with hearing the dull pop of distant (ish) gunshots while waiting for the bus. Fun times.

I agree as well, and I live in LA now.
Then again, I do have a “BEAT LA” sign on my dorm room door, so I’m not exactly the typical resident…

I remember going to the draft when it was held in Detroit. I believe it was free. The Wings were giving out free pizza slices.
Shanny was taken by Jersey and Dale Hunter walked in just in time to see that he’d been traded from Quebec to Washington.

Who’s going?
Not the Leafs. (Sorry, I’ll stop now.)
Though I see from Wikipedia that I missed my shot to go to the draft here in Calgary in 2000, because I didn’t move here until weeks later. Too bad; I’d have enjoyed spending my Saturday trying to figure out who the hell Alexei Mikhnov was.
