Who's that? Little knowns and unknowns making an early impact
It's way too early in the season to draw any conclusions about the Coyotes or Avs or so and so's two-game scoring slump, but one thing I try to keep an eye on in the early going is low profile players earning noteworthy ice time around the league.
Here's a list of 25 players, 15 forwards and 10 defenders, picking up some surprising minutes so far (Rk is their ice time rank for their position):

Some of the players here are far more surprising than others (who knew Benn Ferriero would make the Sharks, for one) but I'd wager most are relative unknowns for your average hockey fan. Some of those above have even played some decent minutes in the NHL in the past (like Butler in Buffalo) although most are either unheralded rookies or veteran minor leaguers getting a long-awaited shot.
Wallin, Wandell and Pyorala are in a different category altogether as European imports, all of whom had to win roles in training camp and preseason.
Any of the "unknowns" impressed you to this point?

Moulson
For those not following the Islanders (I know, I know, who would miss it?!), Moulson had a productive preseason on Tavares’s wing. They go back a ways and have some chemistry, so expect him to keep getting a heavy dose of TOI for now alongside Tavares and, so far, Kyle Okposo. They were definitely a fun line to watch in the opener.

Good for him. He’s a fairly effective defensive player, he just couldn’t catch on in LA once Wayne Simmonds showed up.

That was what we were hoping — just not a spot for him in L.A. He scored tonight, by the way.
I love Simmonds.

Butler
Spent a lot of time working with Craig Rivet on his game, and projects to be a similar player.
He’s also in the power play discussion as the Sabres don’t really have a proven defense point man with Spacek gone.

Myers
The Tall Guy played 20 minutes tonight, had a great keep-in in the offensive zone that led to the tying goal. The increase is most likely due to all the power play time (thanks Kaleta!).

From everything I’ve seen, I think Myers could be a much bigger factor in their season than people realize. That’s exactly the kind of defender they needed, and it’s just a matter of how quickly he can fill that role in big minutes.

nod I don’t want them to rush him along, but you are right, he is needed out there. Despite it being his second pro game, he doesn’t look out of place. If he beats the crap out of someone next game, he will have women in Buffalo proposing.

By the end of last season Butler-Rivet was really the top pair in Buffalo, so this is really no surprise. Butler’s game is steady and he makes the game look easy, don’t be surprised if he keeps logging 20+ minutes a night. Myers is going to be a factor if he keeps playing like he has so far. He might even help to resurrect Hank Tallinder’s game. I’m not sure anyone has to fill big minutes, though, James. Ruff will spread the ice-time out to ensure having 6 fresh pairs of legs at the end of the game.
The Sabres have three natural Right-Handers in in their lineup withMyers. If things keep going the way they are Sekera will be sitting when Lydman returns. Lydman can move back to his natural side with Montador and the pairs look as follows:
Butler/Rivet
Lydman/Montador
Tallinder/Myers
That’s a big and relatively mobile defense. Not a ton of offense, but still plenty of guys who can make a good first pass into transition.
Paetcsh/Sekera in reserve.

I was thinking that too last night, Tom.
Tallinder sure looks good next to Myers.

I didn’t see the game last night… still working out cable issues with a new roommate, but I thought Hank improved throughout the MTL game, and from what I’ve heard about last night’s game, he was noticeably better than he’s been. Mike Robitaille is right, 2nd pair defensemen don’t grow on trees, and Tallinder is capable of that (and more, but I think that ship has sailed), so rebuilding him would be a huge boost for the Sabres.
I did not like Sekera’s performance in the opener. At this point I wouldn’t change anything about Myers’ situation, hence add Lydman and subtract Sekera and give Montador the help he needs.

It’s an underrated defence. And one on a playoff team, in my mind.

Carkner
Matt Carkner has been a huge surprise in Ottawa’s first two games. During the pre-season, he beat out Brian Lee for a spot on the blue-line for two reasons: Lee was waiver-exempt while Carkner isn’t, and Carkner adds a much-needed physical presence. However, the guy is 29 and had only played 2 NHL games prior to this year, and was perceived by many to be a huge liability on the back-end.
Somehow, though, he’s held his own. He’s kept his game extremely simple, and through solid positional play has impressed me (and obviously the Senators brass). I hope he can keep it up.

I think the Ryan O’Reilly experiment in Colorado is just that, an experiment. He’s getting his nine games in the show and then he’s back to the O. Galiardi however, should stick with the big club.

not sure
I waiver back and forth on that daily. If he’s sent down, who the hell replaceshim? The Avs are pretty thin at forward

Pyorala
He hasn’t really done much in the first three games (0 pts, +2), but he had a really good preseason and seems to be a very smart player. On the wing with Gagne and Richards, it should be easy for him to put up some impressive numbers this year.

Benn in Dallas
now has 5GP 1G, 4A 5PTS
He’s become a fixture on that line with Morrow and Ribiero. If he continues to play there and get some powerplay time he’s going to be in the running for the calder.
