Around SBN: Post-UNC Thoughts

Phoenix Coyotes President and Chief Operating Officer Douglas Moss announced today that the Coyotes’ 2009-10 Home Opener versus the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, Oct. 10 is sold out.

"The fan response to the ‘Welcome Back WhiteOut’ offer has been tremendous and we’d like to thank everyone for their support," said Moss.

A limited number of standing-room only tickets in the upper level will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. for $15. The tickets are available only through www.phoenixcoyotes.com or at the Jobing.com Arena Box Office.

Waiting for the asterisks from the peanut gallery...

…but I’ll be there and enjoying the ambience. Might be my last opportunity to see it.

The gallery may hold their thoughts until we see what attendance is like throughout the rest of the season. It’ll be nice to see a symbolic full house for the first game, but there’ll still be a lot of eyes on the balance sheet all year.

Would be nice, but...

not a chance the “gallery” waits for the “rest of the season.” If Thursday’s game with St. Louis does not sell out Phoenix will be deemed dead. Hey, I see Resolute already weighed in with an asterisk and we didn’t even get to play to the sell-out crowd yet.

The fact that it would cost me more to attend a Junior A hockey game in Calgary than it did many, many people in Phoenix tonight is enough for me to hang an asterisk on it. It’s great that people came out when the tickets were practically given away, but we have no idea how many people are willing to pay full price for this team.

Look at it this way...

…at least the idea that “THEY CAN’T GIVE TICKETS AWAY TO HOCKEY IN ARIZONA!!!!1” has been proven false… :P

do you deny the asterisk(s)?

No, I’m just sick of them. They ought to rename the team the Asterisks. Nothing they do is ever analyzed without an assload of caveats.

Congrats to them on the sellout. Also on shutting out Pittsburgh the other day—that’s a victory for us all.

Not to mention a hell of an effort last night in Buffalo too, especially by LaBarbera.

Too bad the Coyotes were too busy chasing around Kaleta to try and win.

I know! It was amazing to watch a team lose trying to get retribution. They are fast though!

You can bet Scottie Upshall is either scratched or plays low minutes Saturday. That’s two straight games where he’s taken bad penalties in critical situations and I’m not sure Tippett is going to stand for it.

Then again, having Scottie Upshall and Dave Tippett making critical decisions in the first place speaks to a larger problem.

I hate to ask, but I must confess a certain morbid curiosity – what problem does Dave Tippett represent for the Coyotes?
