Hurricanes drop 14th straight
Ugliness in Carolina these days. The 'Canes have now lost more games in a row than any other team postlockout, and the most since a couple teams did worse in the 2003-04 season. Their marquee star, Eric Staal, is out with an injury. So is Cam Ward. They're tight against the salary cap.
And no one wants to see a white-helmeted Manny Legace starting all your games and Bryan Rodney, he of ECHL fame, taking a regular turn on the blueline in overtime.

I feel really bad for Carolina. A lot of teams have been hit by injuries to star players, but it hits a team like the Hurricanes the hardest.

Have you seen the Canucks injury list this year?

Meh, the Habs have used 12 different d-men in less than 20 games. I feel sorry for no one.

In all fairness, Staal and Cam Ward weren’t doing much to stem the tide before they went out on IR.

They better win on Sunday vs. Minny. Because I don’t want a team that hasn’t won in 15 games playing the Habs on Tuesday. Especially the Hurricanes, who always play the Habs hard and usually win.

Man, when your franchise goalie and your franchise forward both are on the shelf, its gonna be tough to win games and the canes lack depth in all positions and it shows. But this decreases the chances of Boston landing the first overall pick so leaf fans ca hope for something.

It depresses me when Southeast clubs struggle.

Rod Brind’Amour needs to retire. Yesterday.
Of course, I’m not saying he WILL quit on the team in the middle of the losing streak, but IMO, he shouldn’t have even come back for this season.

Brind’Amour needs to give the team a pep talk.

That video reminds me of good times.
The seeds of the Brind’Amour issue were sown that summer, though — signing a guy turning 36 to a five-year contract was a poor choice. Brind’Amour retiring would ease the locker room problem of the captain becoming a disaster on the ice, but the Canes are stuck with his cap hit through 2010-11 no matter what (unless they managed to offload him on somebody somehow).
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.

Staal is not the Captain… he was hurting the team trying to play injured anyway….

I never really understood
why the ‘Canes were such a popular choice for a top four seed anyway. Yes, they had a good playoff run, and yes, Eric Staal is extremely good. But lots of awful teams have one extraordinary player, and while I understand that Cam Ward has always been popular, his career save percentage of 90.3 isn’t that impressive. One great half-season shouldn’t establish him as an elite netminder.
To me, this stretch of terrible play is less surprising than the extended run of success they had last year.

I'm not really surprised
The thing about the Hurricanes is that they’re good one year, awful the next. If they keep up the roller-coaster ride, they should be really good next year.

Good One, Bad For Two
2002 – Lost SCF
2003 – Missed playoffs
2004 – Missed playoffs
2005 – Lockout
2006 – Stanley Cup
2007 – Missed playoffs
2008 – Missed playoffs
2009 – Conf Finals
If the pattern holds, they’ll be crud for two years and have a long playoff run in 2012.

The good news is that Maurice will be fired and it’ll be Laviolette back in the saddle again for 2012, so they’ll have a better chance of winning the Cup again.

SO glad Toronto finally got rid of Maurice. He was a likable guy, and funny with the media, but a god-awful coach.
And Laviolette. God I hate Laviolette. Maybe it’s from when he coached the Isles back when we made the playoffs and stuff. Or maybe it’s just those teeth.
Yeah, it’s the teeth.
