Edmonton gets its chance to boo Heatley
"The fans are passionate, the fans are loud. Regarding what went on in the summer, some people are still unhappy," said Heatley, who will be playing in Canada for the first time since pressuring the Ottawa Senators to trade him. "There's nothing I can do about it. I'm just going to go out there and play." Heatley has been the target of fan wrath before, in Atlanta after he asked to be traded from the Thrashers. "You just deal with it. It's not the first time, it's not going to be the last time," he said.
Given the year he's having, I doubt Dany Heatley feels he made the wrong choice. He's in relatively anonymity in California, free from most criticism and playing with one of the best setup men in the league.
Heatley's second in the NHL right now with 18 goals, meaning he's on pace for about 57, a career high. His team is in first place in the entire league, 13 points up on the Oilers, but the interesting part is that his ice time is at 20 minutes a game, almost exactly what he got in Ottawa.
Maybe his role there wasn't the problem?
In any event, this one comes with a bid of added theatre obviously, so fire it up on Centre Ice if you get a chance.

With Hemsky possibly out for the season with a shoulder injury...
I’d be too depressed to boo Heatley. This might be like the game immediately after Smyth got traded where the fans just didn’t care.

If I know Edmontonians, and sadly, I do, they will boo. If nothing else, he will give them an outlet to focus their anger and disappointment over yet another lost season.

California has a hockey team?

I think so, not sure though. I personally don’t follow any team that’s not in Canada or in the eastern time zone.

Of course they do! Remember the Ducks of Anaheim? They won a Cup a few years ago.
I don’t remember Heatley getting traded to Anaheim, though. :-)

Weren’t they the first Pacific Coast team to ever win the Stanley Cup in the entire history of the trophy? I’m sure that’s what the NHL said…

Hm, thanks for the continued Sharks love, James. Since my pro-Sharks/anti-Leafs tirade a week ago, that’s something like 3 posts and counting… :)

There’s no editorial plan here. Just whatever strikes my fancy that day.

What a shock. He writes about one of the most popular teams AND one of the best in the league.
It’s mind boggling

A Leafs fan AND a total asshole.
What a shock.

Hey, PPP, are you going to take that . . . well, come to think of it, I have no idea whether you’re lying down or not.

Ah, I should have let it go. I’m just joshing.
Haven’t had a discussion this mature since Grade 3.

"Maybe his role there wasn't the problem?"
MAYBE?
The whole ‘diminished role’ thing is garbage. He’s getting the same time he had in Ottawa, and he’s spent ime on San Jose’s second powerplay unit, too. The difference is that now he’s got more support, so he’s not looked at for on-ice leadership or defensive responsibility. He was asked to do more in Ottawa, but he didn’t want to.
That said, we did acquire Milan Michalek, whose work ethic appears to be second to none, and the rest of the leadership core (Chris Neil, Mike Fisher) appear to be doing well with the increased demands Heatley’s absence has put on them.

Like I said in the C&B game-day thread, I’d rather boo Tambellini for allowing himself to get caught up in the hoopla for Heatley taking one look at the Oilers’ roster and going, “no thank you.”

Was it really Tambellini though? That entire debacle sounded so much like Kevin Lowe’s big game hunting habits to me.
One does have to wonder if Tembellini ever got the training wheels taken off.

A fair point. Nonetheless, he’s the public face of the general manager’s office, so he gets both the public credit and the public blame for his moves.
