A few words from Snow
I had the chance to meet up with Isles GM Garth Snow briefly when they were in town, and talk about rebuilding his team with one of the true youth movements in the NHL. To my surprise, however, he wasn't all that forthcoming in talking about the "rebuilding" part of what's happening on Long Island:
"I don’t use that word rebuild. We’re trying to make the playoffs and win a Stanley Cup like every other team. We don’t go in with the mindset that losing is acceptable, and when that word is used, sometimes winning doesn’t matter. I don’t think I’ve used that word too much and if I have, it’s been very limited. We’re trying to win every hockey game we play in. The group that we have in that locker room, it may be young, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have success."
I'm sure they're sensitive in New York to the perception of how they ended up with John Tavares on the team, but that group last season was decimated by injuries and that certainly contributed to their downfall. And, anyway, as I've said before, I don't think the stigma in the league around losing to eventually win is all that merited.
Clearly the Isles are on a smarter path now than they've been for some time, and what's surprising everyone is how many games they're winning already with their young cast. It's going to be interesting what they do when Rick DiPietro comes back.

The Isles and tankign
If anyone thinks the Isles tanked, how do you explain a winning record in March?

Nearly Ten Years of Milbury running the show will make anyone look like Das Wunderkid. It feels like waking up from a nightmare. And I don’t care that he got us to the playoffs twice. The amount of talent and money he squandered makes those two playoff “runs” a joke.
"So basically, the Stats make no sense whatsoever."

forthcoming means it’s about to be revealed.

Sometimes words have more than one meaning. James was correct.
Quite frankly, because teams in general are more mediocre than pre-lockout (I subscribe to Tom Benjamin’s NHL parity = NHL mediocrity), young teams can win quicker than in the past. So Snow is correct in saying that they are trying to win every game they play. I can’t see the Islanders missing the playoffs next year, and they could make it even this year.

Hey, you can still be rebuilding and trying to win games every night. I didn’t expect him to say they were tanking over and over.

I think his response was mostly to avoid the connotation that “losing right now is acceptable since we’re on the path to long-term success”. The word certainly seems to be employed in that manner by team leaders reasonably often, so it’s probably a fair response by Snow even though no one was suggesting he wants the team to tank.
...loving life for Christ's glory...
Snow always chooses his words so carefully, and sounds so tight-lipped when on the record.
“…almost two years ago, we set a direction, a course where we would build through the draft and develop our talent and sprinkle in free agents when it made sense.”I really like what he’s doing with the club, and I understand the sensitivity to not giving this year’s players an easy out with “it’s okay, you’re rebuilding” talk. But honestly, why does he have trouble calling the above strategy a rebuild?
The team was a mess not of his making. Of course(!) they’re trying to win every game while being smart about their long-term strategy. But if they had greater urgency to win now, they’d have done more over the summer. It’s okay to call a spade a spade: In Year 2, this rebuild is coming along just fine.
